Helms Deep has so much potential, and sure, there are lots of versions, so you probably think I am just following in it's wake with something identical. I'm not. Yet every version I have seen conforms to what the majority of people want: Over powered heros that are the only thing that matter and can kill 1000 orcs without a scratch. Also, they are basicly hack'n'slash, where all you do is blink about and then your hero automatically kills everything. And someone has to be orcs. And they tend to have stock abilities or very similar, and nothing origional. So, I tried to create something that solved the problems I see. Now, that's why I've done it so I don't have morons saying 'but there are already 1000s of helms deep maps! Do something origional!'. My Helms Deep so far and in the near future (I have not been working on it for long, but I did start off with a usefull base for most of the units and heros out of an older one of mine): Overview You control a hero and a small group of swordsmen and archers (this will be changed for more variety later) and a hero. The orcs auto-matically spawn and follow paths in waves. You must stop the orcs for 15 minutes from reaching the inner keep and destroying the gate, which leads into the caves where the women and children of Rohan are hiding. The Heros Yes, the heros. Your hero is stronger than most of your units (some captains are stronger), and has an array of custom abilities, most of which are based on stock abilities, but most heros have something origional or two. While your hero is strong, it is not strong enough to take on 100 orcs at a time without being slaughtered. His main weapons are his abilities. Most melee heros have a healing ability, so they can be supported by swordsmen with less fear of them dying. The heros are also mostly balanced. The Human Units The Human units at the moment consist of Swordsmen and Archers, as well as Knights for Theoden. The swordsmen can turn into archers, and vice versa, meaning you can have all archers for a while as they are gradually pushing up, but then when they reach you, attack with swordsmen. The Orcs The orcs attack in waves at about 3 a minute, with smallish waves. However, then there are special waves every so often that either is a big full on attack from everywhere, or a strong, focused attack. Normally, early game will launch focused attacks upon the Walls, or full attacks, and then latter attack the keep, since you will have normally been forced into the keep and off the walls. The special waves will also be partially random, so it will be different in different games, increasing playability. Currently there are only 4 types of orc attackers, but that might change. And the orc movement is flawless, so far at least. Demo Version All i have to do to get it ready for demo is do 70% of the abilities and 90% of the special waves, so I should have it out by monday hopefully. Also, I want to protect it, so I need to find a good protector before then, since my old one has screwed up... |

The problem with helm's deep is that its kinda a let down if there aren't masses of enemy units attacking. And if theres masses of enemy units attack the engine can't handle it (mostly because you can't select more than 12 units... or was it 16). I've totally given up on helms deep type maps, it's simply not compatible with WC3 IMO. |

I have to agree with th15. And another thing, altrough there is nothing wrong with making a map after the movie, I am still waiting to see someone make a map who has actually read the book. In the book, the enterances to the caves were not in the keep, but at the end of the valley. |

Yah, that's always disturbed me. I mean, in the movie; the path into the caves are in the actual keep, so; why the heck defend the wall (or even have it) other than (which is the reason not to have it) to make sure that any eventual rescue group won't have to take back the wall from the enemies? And I never play the Helms Deeps' nowadays. Heroes way overpowered, and the key to success for humans is basically to bunker in the last place and shoot everything that moves. I hope your map won't be like that. Good luck. |
