Hills, flat, to noisy, WHAT?!

I see to flat terrain all the time, and then i also see comments like "the terrain is too flat". when it's too flat, what do YOU do about it?

I voted "other" myself already. i use higher+lower, add cliffs, doodads, and if i want the cliffs to look mountainous i use noise.

It matters the enviroment of my terrain, to what i do, if its a aos map, i wouldn't add many doodads, but just slight changed in terrain and some elevation changes. But a RPG i would add doodads, noise, rise, lower, elevation, water, and different tiles.

What I do is noise it a lot, then smooth it out. (not all the way, but bumpy smooth) Works pretty well.

this is my personal favourite method of terraining. if you want an area to be overall flat, but of course plain flat terrain just looks dull, noise, the smooth untill it matched the environment you want

Using Noise and Smooth is used pretty much... it comes to look pretty well too. Personally I just do it the old-long way :p Just the 'Raise' and 'Lower' button ;)

But it also depends on what you're making. The Noise and Smooth way isn't always effective in some places (I can't give an example at the moment) same way for the old Raise and lower.

The good ol' manual raise and lower has never failed me. Plus you get more control over how you want the terrain to look. Personally I feel that the noise then smooth is a lazy way to attempt to make the terrain more interesting. Unless it's done well, that method doesn't usually work.

I never use the noise tool. I don't think it looks very good, so I prefer the manual lowering/raising of the terrain. Sometimes, I use cliffs too, but only if they fit well to the rest.
So I vote for " combination of 3 + 4."

Greetings

Yeah, I completely agree with it :D
Though Noise-Smooth works somewhat more then in the way you're saying it though :) Though personally I see it also as a way of... lazyness...

Pick noise and click on one spot for 5 seconds. this is how most people make it "interesting". looks more like microwaves got over though. using that and smooth i found working interesting. it's not really lazyness, it's more like: why do it difficult if you can do it easy? i'm not calling that lazy.

Maybe not lazyness then, sorry if I offended anyone with it, it is just... well it is more accurate if you do it handmaticly (Raise and Lower) Hard to desribe it actually...

I'm not offended, i'm just defending the other side. and i think it's both pretty good working.

i usually use "highering" but most of the time u have to play it by ear and use a combo of different terraining tools to get the right effect.

Iuse everything cept noise. i usually start with an ocean and build the land up. Makes it look more real. noise just looks bad in my opinion. unless you can do it right.
but yea start with deepwater lowest land level build it up with higheten tool and go from therre makes nice islands and stuffs.
