What type of Items do you like?

I am making a Aos/DotA type map and am wondering how I should make the items.
Should I :
1 have recipes? (where someone has x# diff items that combine into 1)
2 have speciality items? (only may be used by archer, mage, undead, etc.)
3 have items with abilities attached like cyclone or blizzard?
4 have different rarities?
5 change the font colors on the items? Frostguard Holy Cloak
6 make some items undroppable or drop on death?
7 have tons of items? (I would import WoW icons in this case to give variety)
8 sell the items though many shops or though menus or something else
9 use wood and gold 4 item purchases(item#1 cost 1g 3w,item#2 cost 4g 1w)
10 make items available through mini-quests
11 make item abilities cost mana
12 make items change attack graphics
13 make items change unit colors
14 make some items have pos and neg attributes (+90 mana -5% mana regen)
15 make items able to be sold
16 make some items take more space (2-hand crossbow takes 2 slots)

You do not need to answer all of these questions, just the ones you have an opinion about.

Well, it depends largely on what effect you want the items have on the game. The Great Strategy, for example, has some pretty good items but many players don't use them because they're buying troop upgrades instead.

Maybe you want your items to allow the player to customize his hero, in which case you might want to tie his level into the type of weapons he can use.

Maybe you want the inventory to spice things up a little by giving lots of perishable charged items that players have to make use of creatively to win the battle.

Think hard about what you want the end product to be like, then think about how each idea helps you accomplish that.

How about do like we did in KP making items in sets of diffrent gods. But to make your map diffrent to KP try to make it as in D2 that when you compleated a set you recive a bounus or something.

as for that mini quest thing I'd like to see more of those in AOS maps.

th15:

I don't plan on having mercs or non-ability upgrades

Tieing in hero level would be interesting

I don't really think I am going to put in perchable items unless they are really cheap and don't do much, I am more likely to make it have creativity by giving the permanent items spells with diff cooldowns. A person may choose to have 4 weak items with 4 weak spells or 1 strong item of equal monetary value with a strong spell.

I would rather have others be happy with my map than satistify my own whims

HyperNox:

Yeah i forgot about sets. I should make a variety of strength and rarity sets

I'll use quest to put in rarity type items
