Mission: Extermination

Hello, I haven't posted here in a very long time but now I have a map that's going pretty well. It's a futuristic style map using (you guessed it) the Marine models and Zerg-style creatures. But I figured I'd make it like one of those old top down shooters, where you use the arrow keys to move, and you don't need the mouse for anything, really. Oh yeah, and it's single player.

At the moment, I've finished all the triggers for player control (movement and shooting), and gotten all the basics done. I've gotten a central 'Lobby' area done complete with Holographic area label, and started on the first area of the game.

Your mission is simple; Dispose of all mutated life-forms within the D-Sci Research and Education facility. Your helpful floating computer, 'Nav', is always behind you to help, giving hints, information and warnings (although there is a bug where you can kill it in a trap X.x).

I hope to do a lot to this map, and eventually complete it. Uh, stay posted, I guess.

Oh and I also have a screenshot of the Lobby for ya. ^^

Uh, the mission is too generic and ,no offence, uninspiring. Have other objectives like disable to psi wave generator or close the gates.

Yes, I know it seems quite generic but it's not like it seems. It's kind of hard to explain, so I'll just say I'm making it kinda like Metroid Fusion, if you've ever played that (on GBA). There's little scripted disasters in that, and you have the little Nav computer telling you what's going on and what you should do.

So your ultimate objective is to exterminate all of the mutants, but to make it less repetitive, there will be puzzles, changes in direction, enhancements for your character, bosses and more. Sorry I didn't touch on that, I hadn't done much apart from the player control triggers etc. But now I've got some idea of what will happen.

I'm currently finishing the first boss and starting on the second area - the Bioharadous Materials section (which, unfortunately, has sprung a major leak, requiring you to get an anti-viral upgrade for your suit).

As long as it i'snt Quake/etc style where you collect keys and shoot everybody to get the goal.
This could turn out to be fun.

Hi again. Just an update here.

Some major changes have gone on. I haven't added much to the map but I've been working on the gameplay and triggering etc. The game is now in the style of a First person shooter (took me ages to work out the camera for some reason).

I dunno if I said this but the boss has a kind of movement pattern, like the old platformers did :) He attacks you, runs away and attacks again, runs away - and repeat (He has a ranged attack). I'm gonna try and put some movement patterns into the other monsters aswell, like make the litte mutant rats move to the side once they come to attack you, as if to dodge, or something like that.

I've yet to think of some more interesting story things, but I'll (try to) keep you posted. I'm pretty sure I might even complete this map, I kept starting on other stuff but I WILL complete this one.

Ta ta for now!

Alright, another update. I have the movement, shooting, view etc. close to perfection.

I also have a little idea that might be good; Making it multiplayer. Do you think it'd be better as a single player or do you want to pump lead into mutants with your buddy?

I've been thinking about it, it wouldn't be too hard to put 1 or 2 other players into it. It'd mean having to remove some stuff and make it harder but it sounds like a fun idea.

Anyways, bye. Any other input is welcome.

Well I have been workin' quite a lot on this today, and I thought I'd post some screenshots to let you know how it's all going.

I think that's all I need to say... Oh well, enjoy!

Very nice, I like the target point. I am anxiously waiting for this map.
I think it would be better as a single person type map for the story's sake. If you want you could make a multiplayer melee version.

Update time!

I've made it so far up to a part where you must turn on some auxiliary power generators. The facility's life support is slowly failing, so you have a time limit in which to go to 1 generator, turn it on, then go to another and turn that one on. Of course, it wont be as simple as that, it is a disaster, after all.

I've also done quite a lot to another map - Team Onslaught 3000 (the 3000 is for that ultra cool dramatic effect ;) ). I thought it'd be good if I made a Warcraft version of Unreal Tournamet 2004's Onslaught mode, only simpler (because I'm lazy).

Quite simply, you connect a number of capture points in a line to your enemy's HQ, which you must destroy. You may spawn at either your HQ or any capture point owned by your team when you die. There are also vehicles (what kind of person would I be if I didn't put them in?), and a selection of weapons. You can only use 1 weapon at a time and each weapon has it's own ammunition (using item custom values).

I haven't yet tested this because I can't host on Battle.net and I can't find anyone that could host for me, so I'm asking anyone that reads this if they'd like to host some of my maps to test for me.

That's all for now, goodbye.

Do you have an estimated release time for Mission:Extermination yet?

Release time... uh I dunno. I'm kinda working on this on and off, so don't go waiting and checking every day to see if I'm done ;)

I'd say some time in the next few months, since I'm off school completely then and will have the time to work on it. Since I've got other projects aswell, though (other warcraft maps, a flash movie...), it may either take longer, or I'll try and finish it sooner. I have loads of free time though, and I doubt it's going to take any more than a month and a half.

All I have to do is terrain the rest of the sections, trigger the events, create new units and bosses then I'm basically done. Then there's playtesting... I'll be sure to post a beta of the map sometime this or next week to see what you think I need to do or anything extra the map needs.

Yeah I think I'll do that. Next week, say monday or tuesday, I'll post up a beta, just to give you something to look forward to (unless you don't want to ruin the story ;))

Man, I only planned to say "I don't know". Oh well, goodbye for now.

Tiny update, just information really.

I'm thinking of perfecting Mission:Extermination, so as to make a 'demo' version of it, which I'll release sometime next week, as I said. I wont go in to make the generator mission, I'll more or less end it when you get to the warp pad (you need to get to the generator section on a teleporter), and say something like "Thank you for playing the Mission: Extermination demo".

I'll do this because I have an idea for a big surprise to stick in at some point, and the stuff I have at the moment is just a taster of how the game is played, and what crazy things can happen.

Please feel free to shout abuse at me if I don't post it up by next week.

That's all for now, if you have any questions, ask away, or just post here for the hell of it, not enough people are showing interest :P
