Personally i like Photoshop over Painshop.
Photoshop is easier to navigate and use in my opinion, also, it has more featues.

I prefer Paint Shop Pro, photoshop is better and has more features but Paint Shop Pro is easier to use, cheaper and doesn't take up that much space. Photoshop is just a professional paint program for doing nearly anything with images.

personally ive gotta go with photoshop.... ive never used it but alot of the pro skinners here use it, and from using psp7, i feel really restricted in how i can develop my skills as a skinner, since photoshop has so many more options.. although if you just want to make small adjustments to skins, not change any details, maybe just make a footman have red armor not white, or other small details, psp7 is the way to go as its cheaper, but for professional jobs, go for photoshop

I've actually used both programs. Paint shop pro IS better for newbies, but if you want to get serious about skinning and want to do more then simple recolors you need to get photoshop.

It is better for newbies but that you need to get photoshop to do good skins is absolute bullshit. I use and have used Painshop Pro for quite some time now and can do more or less the same as people with photoshop can. Sure photoshop is a better proggie but I like using Paintshop Pro more seeing as I'm much more used to it. And with my experience on using it, there's nothing really that I can't do in PSP that people do in Photoshop, there are just other ways of doing it.

The best is a mix of Painter 7/8 and PhotoImpact 8. Photoshop's got such a horrible interface.

I use Serif Photoplus, it's old, free and simple. But for skinning warcraft 3 models (which aren't very demanding compared to Halo, UT 2k3/4, etc.) it works fine. The only problem I have with wc3 skins is that it doesn't save alpha to .tga's but I can simply save as .png and convert to .tga. This way I don't even have to much around with alpha channels, the blank area's (little checkered squares) are the alpha. Free way to skin wc3.

photoshop is all i have... but i must say, combined with my wacom, it works wonderfull... allthough i'm not such an experienced skinner,i doubt any program could make my skinning-experience more pleasurable...

and photoshop is verry handy and neat for just making art as well, wich is the reasen why i got it in the first place... just to color my art ^^''

point is, it doesnt really matter what you use... as long as it doesnt restrict your creative experience to be to its full extend.
