Explanation of "Ability Level Bonus" needed

I made a custom ability based off of Searing Arrows called Magic Missile. I made it a unit ability and gave it 10 levels, properly defining the "Text - Tooltip - Normal" so that I can tell what level it's on at all times.

I gave listed the ability in the Amazon's "Abilities - Normal" list and placed her on the map.

I made a custom upgrade with no gold/lumber cost and 5 levels. I set effect 1 to "Ability Level Bonus" with base 1 increment 2 and "Ability Affected" as "Magic Missile".

I since have tried using both an upgrade building and the trigger "Player - Set the current research level of Magic Missile to 2 for Player 1 (Red)" and have had no success in getting it off of level 1.

Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong? This is terribly frustrating.

The unit thats using the ability has to have the upgrade. So go to the unit in the Object Editor, scroll down to the bottom and click Upgrades Used. Then give the caster the upgrade and it should level properly.
