I've always thought 256 by 256 was generally the biggest used for custom maps online, but if you made one larger, such as 352 by 192 or some odd number, would it cause any problems online?
It won't play if it's bigger than 256x256, or is it that you just can't make a map with those dimensions? I'm using WE Unlimited, so I can go beyond 256 in the editor.
You could go to 480x480, but I like to see you try to load that. My first map was 192x192 and took 2 minutes to load on battle.net (and it wasn't the fault of units or scenery as there was almost none pre-placed), after reducing the size to 168x168 it started loading in less than 20 seconds. The loading time increases unproportinally with map size. 480x480 would probably take an hour to load, if the game wouldn't freeze up completely.
I believe that's an exaggeration, or caused by the WE improperly saving the map.
168 x 168 is theoretically 28,224 'terrain' points. 192 x 192 is negligably higher when you consider the processing power of today's, and yes, multiple year old PCs.
