Battle-Net **A MUST READ**

Caution: This is a pretty long thread, so if you have something better to do, do it.

Well, with WC3 campaigns being down, I decided to stop making maps and play some battlenet. Yes, it was my first time. I've never played multiplayer with anyone before. Well, here's a few things I learned that could be useful to ppl new to battle-net.

1. There are two types of games. DL=Ban and DL Only.
A. DL=Ban games are for ppl that are too lazy to wait 1 minute for someone to download the map, so instead, they boot them. It's hard getting into games like this because their is about 50 versions of each game.
B. DL Only are games where someone creates a game with a map (probably one that they made, or modified) and sits there for about 30 minutes while ppl come in to download it so they can play DL=Ban games without fear of getting booted.

2. Hero Arena maps are.... fun. *ducks for cover*. If you don't think so, then you've never had a lvl 10 demon hunter insanely powered by ultimate tomes. Crushing weakling nooB heros is truly a real thrill.

3. Tower Defense maps........aren't. I don't care if give ppl kool abilities and make mazes, they ARE NOT FUN. Maybe you like em, but it remides me of that one zergling bunker game for SC. It gets old. Fast.

4. If you're going to play a map you haven't before, my advice is to PRETEND that you have. If someone realizes that you are a newbie, you 9/10 times WILL be booted.

5. There is about a zillion (well maybe like 3000) versions of TD, FMVH, Hero Arena, bugz vs. humans, and golem maps. Seriously. One idea I had was to try to download as many as I could, zip file em together and post them on the internet. Chances are every time you join a game, you'll be downloading a new version.

Why am I posting all of this mostly useless stuff. Wel, partly to give advice to ppl new to battle-net and partly because there are some really kool maps that the ppl in the 'Map Development' forum should take a look at.

Game 1 - Super Mario Kart - Anyone think my Pacman map was good. Ha, forget that and check out this map. It uses the 'item shop' method to control your 'tank' (I'll email it to ya if you want). 9 Players. If you've ever player Mario Kart for N64, it's like that. With powerups that you can use. Also, if you run into a bomb, you'll have to stop at the pit stop to repair. This is a MUST for map makers to check out.

Game 2 - Hero Arena's. Yeah, I know there all the same, but besides TD, its the most popular. If you ever want to get ppl mad crazy for your maps, make one of these with the baddest stuff around and, for the love of god, PROTECT IT!

Game 3 - Resident Evil - Sure, the terrain sucks, its not very original, but there is some sort of awesome thrill running from swarms of zombies. ;)

Game 4 - Murder at the Mansion/Graveyard - This definently (besides HA's) has to be the best and most original map around. picture this. 8-10 ppl. 1 of the is a secret killer. 3 lives. Must survive for 10 minutes. Run! (Or in the killer's case, kill, kill!) You've got to check this map out!

So, I guess the only question left for you to ask is, why am I wasting your time making you read this instead of playing on Battle-Net. The answer... I'm at work. Uh-oh, here comes the boss. Laterz.

The thrill will wear off and you'll start to actually play some good maps one of these days. Everything you've mentioned has been old for a while.

The thing that ruins b.net is the millions of shitty hero arena maps, trillions of evil tower defence maps and the tons of Aeon maps.

Has anyone seen my maps on B-net hosted and being played?(Army Destroyers, Predator, Dark Towers, etc)It really sucks, alot of my maps are really original, but they never get hosted because they aren't cut-and-dry TD, or hero arena.Plus i can't host my games on War3 because i don't have a cable modem. It's really hard to get them popular ://// :(

It's simple really. A map won't become popular if it has a learning curve above 30 seconds, or an intelligence requirement more sophisticated than toe fungus.

After I put out the final version of my RE map, any further projects will most likely not include any form of player chat message triggers. Maps that aren't cut and dry (like an Open RPG) will have trouble attracting most, because people seem to prefer straightforward paths. And usually if your map requires any strategy beyond point and attack then forget about it becoming popular.

Sure it's not to say that all people out there playing UMS have the attention span of Granda Alzheimers, but I'd say the majority does. It usually seems like people /w 56k fit the patient description, because when I opened DL rooms for my RPG they typically stuck the entire 6 minutes or so it took.

You may be right. Not every TD is bad, I just have NEVER found one that is. DBZ maps are also kool. Don't say that there too fast or easy, becauseI was playing an eight player one and everyone got into a big fight at the begining leaving only three of us standing (one of us being an "item hog"). It took us about 3 hours (!!!) to finally lose the game, lol.

On a side note, here's a bit of a real story that happened at my school today. It should make computer nerds everywhere rejoice.

This kid at our school (let's call him buddy) always got picked on by this one mean kid. Eventually the bully got really mad and threw Buddy's bike accross the parking lot, smashing it into little tiny pieces. In a fury of rage, Buddy went over and opened up a can-o-whoopass on the bully. It was the best fight in real life that I've seen all year!

Well, I better go do something useful now, so c ya.

1. Theres not a billion versions of FMVH! I've only seen 2: 1.70 which is the original release and 1.72 which is a beta of the second release.

2. You say super mario kart is really sweet but its just a rip-off from Mr123's Warcart map. It was unprotected and some guy just changed all the names and put his name on it as a creator and then protected it.

Only two versions of FMVH eh? I have a version that says it 4.66. I wasn't talking just lots called FMVH, but more of based on it. (i.e. similar action) Oh for the DBZ maps, just go one battle-net. There's about 2 going everytime I get on. Another kinda wierd one is the Bugz vs. Humans games. I think that the bugz are totally overpowered in the game though.

Someone ripped off the Mario Kart game from Mr. 123 huh? New news to me. Damn map stealers...

Aww... Face it Draco, Hero arena is boring (you played them when the game came out, then it wasnt fun no more...) BUT TD is indeed fun, it can be very fun if you play the ones that requires a strategy to complete! So go try it out! (And DL = BAN is used to keep noobs away, u actually have to wait longer if you put that as a game name)
