I would suggest you do what I did. Mess with the editor.. A LOT. I've been screwing with it for a year now, and I am just now getting ready to release my first map.

It got moved for you. You're in the General Development forum now, which is where non-art, non-trigger questions generally end up.

Turret Wars (that what they are called, Mech_1000's where the first out) are very difficult to do especially if you don't have much experiance with the world editor. I also tried to do a turret wars as my first public map, but not only do you have to get all the triggers working and make sure they will work under extrem circumstances, like masses of units on the map in a small area can cause movement problems.

Then you have to go into extensive testing, for a good TW (or TD) you need tons of tower upgrades and tons of unit types, but balancing becomes an issue. You may think "Bah balancing is easy" but you have to remember how the map is going to be played, you either go for a few towers or tons of towers, a few creeps or masses of creeps but get it only slightly wrong and the game can last a few mins or all night.

My map is attached, it might be able to give you a basic idea on what to do, though it's not finished it took me some time to get the basics working. If you do use it, please acknowledge it in credits.
