Seems like you replaced war3map.shd (which is the shadow file)
The JASS file is war3map.j (or Scripts\war3map.j if it has been protected)

Because deleting in MPQs does only remove the reference to the file and not the file itself.

After modifying an MPQ, always use the 'Compact' option. I believe it 'finalizes' changes so to speak and actualyl removes deleted files and takes out unused space.

yep, the compact option, cause often deleting files in a mpq increases the size if you don't do that

1) That's actually impossible. Are you using a current version of WinMPQ?
Compacting an MPQ archive frees the space occupied by deleted files (meaning that their entry from the hash table has been removed).
You can try to recompress the 1.73GB file (I still can't believe this) with HeavyLocker. Disable all protection options and select "Keep listfile" and "Force ZLib". Leave the number of files and the buffer size at Auto.
2) You asked this question in the wrong forum. Such questions should be posted into Editing Tools. Your luck that almost the same people visit those forums. ;)
