Attention we are not teachers.

weaaddar
I'm furious at all the threads and people coming toward us with jass knowledge asking us to teach them jass.

It's not that I am a mean person, or that I do not care about your betterment as a developer. Most of the time you people who want to learn jass are very annoying about it; considering it a blemish on your developing record that you can't do jass. Second of all, most of you don't even understand basic programming. Let alone the concepts of objects, pointers ( handles) or procedural programming, all of which slap you in the face while developing in jass. Also, previous program experience helps greatly, HTML contrary to your believe is not a scripting language or a programming language; it is a simple markup language.
Thirdly, many of you make your requests wildly and without caring.
http://www.wc3campaigns.com/showthread.php?t=59637
If your post looks marginally like mine you are mostly likely in the wrong forum to make this request. You'll note we like to use proper sentence structure and syntax. You will realize that in a scripting language you have to have such meticulous standards. But thats beside the post, you are asking for us to embark on a serious expenditure to try to teach you jass, and you already insult us by typing like an idiot.

Fourthly, what you are asking from jass can't be done at all. Ever wonder why you never saw it another map? Chances are it can't be done, or to do it would require more hours then you are willing to devote to it via research and testing.
Finally, most of you don't have the attention span for it. By the time words like handles, memory management, and common.j most of you already have lost interest, or claimed it too hard. Sorry, you just may be too young, and jass certainly isn't the most user friendly language as half of its advance functionality is sanctioned by exploiting a bug.

You may not think this is pandemic, but it is mainly because this chain of thought:
A poster in the trigger haven::
"How Do I DO IMPOSSIBLE CONCEPT X?"
---------------------------------------
I ROXX0R THE MAP EDITOR
The reply from unknowing haven responder::
"Hmm it is teh impossible except maybe with the jass!"

Now two things happen: A) Lord Vexorian, Cubasis, Darky28, or I get a really bad PM asking us if we know how to do it, and if we do can we teach them how to learn jass or more likely B) They come on to this forum, don't read a single sticky and just post garbage like this:

"I AM TEH GOOD TRiGGER, AND A GOOD MAPPER (SEE MY SIG TO SEE HOW I RATE MY SELF, BUT I DO NOT KNOW HOW TO DO IMPOSSIBLE CONCEPT X! HoW Do I DO iT? WHAT IS THE JASS AND CAN IT BE DONE IN TEH JASS? IF SO CAN I LEARN IT, I learnt HTML IN SCHOOL AND I MADE A WEBPAGE!! THANX. I HAVE BEEN WORKING ON MY MAP FOR 4 and a HALF HOURS AFTER I DECLARED MY SELF THE R0XX)R at the EDITOR!! THANKXX (emotey spam here)"

While cubasis or AiAndy or somebody bored may take your implore to heart, we are NOT teachers. Do not expect us to baby feed you the language and don't rep down us, when we tell you that you are not a good mapper, that you suck at memory management or we give you a tutorial link and ask you try that and come to us with a question. If you can't accept that then don't come to our forum. You can ask jass questions in the trigger haven, this in my mind a forum for higher concepts and difficulties.

Kthx bai

P.S. very informative post, but, I must ask, if these "newblars" do not read the stickies, why would they read this one? I hope they do, though. But you'd think there would be a mod for the forum that would force you to read it before you post for the first time in a forum.

Edit: I think those are the first emoticons I've ever used in this forum. So while I am at it.

That is a pretty cool one.

I doubt the people you speak of would take the time to read that, but I agree with you.
I remember helping some guy out with something, but he ended up mocking ME because HE didn't understand crap about jass :<

I agree, we can't take them by the hand and show them everything.

When I get such requests via ICQ or whatsoever I point them to a tutorial which they should go through and maybe to important topics and that's it.
They can come up with specific questions later on but I resent answering vague questions about teH JASS.

PS: Furthermore I like to misuse icons, that's why I gave my post the mdx/mdl icon.

Good post weaaddar If some one wants to learn jass they must be able to learn on there own if they reallt want to learn it. This however dose not mean you cant ask for help. But dont post How do i do this i have no code doneplease do it for me or whats my syntax error? The best teacher for jass in worldeditor itslef make a woring gui trigger and convert into custom text and learn syntax. After you get good at that then Just open up common j as an api Helper if you forget a name of a fuction as we all do.

Nice post, you did a good job giving details of what one should do if you want help on a topic, Although, you probably went a little overboard with this comment

Quote:
Ever wonder why you never saw it another map? Chances are it can't be done, or to do it would require more hours then you are willing to devote to it via research and testing.

The comment is not that bad, it just might squash some creative minds, and although it may be justified from previous complainers (ie n00bs), it still seems a little bit too much, especially in a letter aimed at incoming soon to be JASSers

Oh, and by the way, I am sure plenty of incoming newbies will read this, just, they will be the kind who wouldn't post that kind of crap anyways ^_^

Cubasis
Well,

he's likely thinking about the number of people that think that JASS will bring a magic solution to affect something visually that is not already possible in GUI. Like making the paladin put down his hammer and use a bow or sumtin silly like that.

There are some things that can be done with JASS that cannot be done through GUI (like the upgrade problem I had a month ago, Cubasis and AIAndy might remember this), but the main beauty of jass is that you can write same triggers in more simple way than in GUI. Have you seen a GUI loop converted to JASS? It's ugly, first it sets 2 variables to integers, then loops until variables are equal, increasing 1 all the time, instead of just saying something like:
loop
set k=k+1
exitwhen k==15
endloop
Not that the GUI loop is much worse, but when it gets to more complicated trigger combinations, JASS saves time (when you code at least). Also, JASS is really not that hard to learn if you have some background in programming, 1 month ago I looked at jass for the first time (prior to that I used GUI), now half of my map is in JASS (the stuff that would take more time to write in GUI). In fact, same applies to GUI, those with programming background can manipulate triggers more effectively. I found this link very useful: http://jass.sourceforge.net/doc/api/functions.shtml
It contains all the functions used by JASS, it's verey handy to find a function that you need and to even see its contents to udnerstand how it works.
