seperate skins applied to one model in gmax

I have recently made a model in gmax and found that the texturing tools are a bit confusing.. Basically i choose a certain part of the model and apply one texture to it. Then i move on to another part of the model and apply another texture and so on and so forth. In the end i have about three textures applied to the model. The model exports successfully, the skins dont. I have even gone into my mdl. notepad and added extra lines for the textures/bitmap thing. Put in each file name to use for the textures in blp format like your suppose to. Still isnt getting the skins into wc. So basically im looking for any help from an experienced gmax user. Is there any science to doing the texturing that can be understood?? o_O
