Need help with triggers plz

In my map i want a castle defense where i can upgrade the main gate. However, destrutible gates wont allow you to upgrade them like a building unit would. So i attatched the model onto the lumbermill and other things to make it look just like the gate. Then i relized i couldnt open the gate through the normal trigger since it was no longer considered a doodad. Anyone able to tell me how i can open it using triggers or some way to upgrade a doodad or is this just not possible?

you could do the following

make the gates buildings

place the "base" of the upgrades where you want it then place pathing blockers around parts that cant be entered.

then when what you want to trigger the opening of the door ei. unit get within range of the gate or enters a region... give the gate the "locust / aloc " ability and play the open animation...

that just my view of things...
