Does WoW use MDX,BLP?

From what I understand WoW uses mdx and blp files, I was wondering if the same tools (i.e. W3 viewer) could be use to edit those models/skins.

I think they use mdx2 and blp2s, but it is possible to get them. I think.

The file extention remain the same but from what I gather none of our current tools open them.

Warcraft III mdx files are version 800, in WoW they are version 1300. Nic is working on a specification, so far we know they've added several chunks (likely various animations) and changed up some animation methods. They also added vertex weighting. BLP2 is also different from BLP. They use a different method for palettes but that's all I know about that.

The big problem is unless there's a good functional independent server, WoW mods will be pointless as it is an online game.

Well, I'm sure there will be privet servers running WoW, thre are privet servers running the WoW beta. Never the less I see your point.
