I was thinking

i am gonna make a map, which i will do between projects where

you start off as a child and age to adult etc.

but you see the land is mystical, each day that goes by you will age a year... but thats not the catch, you see one in-game day will take an hour ( thinking of making the time less, but large none the less ) and so you'll take ages to play and get good.

But also if you reach a certain age... lets say 100, you'll die which will force you to start again. to avoid such things you can do some of the following

- study a magical art, most magicains and scorcers have prolonged life ( about to the age of 500 )

- imbue them selfs with the blood of an orc ( lets say prolongs life to age 300 )

- imbue with dragon ( 1000 )

- imbue with an elf ( 600 and resistance to certain things )

- imbue with a demon ( 10000 )

also i will implement a sleep system where you are required to sleep each day.

another thing is, depending on your most common action will it decide what your spells will be made up of. say if you spend a majority of your time in the wilderness kill stuff with an axe or bare hands, you'd be more suited to become a barbarian, if you spend a majority of your time in the towns trading and puchasing you'd be more suited to be a trader.

to allow this to continue over a long period of time i will rely on a save system which will save your stats, gold, experience and XY locations ( though i can use an exisiting one, i do want to learn how to do it myself )

i just want to ask if this is a good idea... i havent started on it yet, because my other map is more of a priority. But for future reference

Sounds cool, but you really better take the amount of time it takes for a day down several notches. I couldn't imagine spending 100 hours (or thereabouts for a normal human) playing one map...

An hour is a bit much--but otherwise, it sounds pretty awesome so long as you can keep the player busy the whole time.

Why not just use the WC3 save feature? Or is this going to be a multiplayer map?

I'd rather see this as a single player map, as you could shove more stuff in it without having to worry about lagging.

Do not force people to sleep at certain times of the day. Rather have it so that after 24hours without sleep units get affected by a "tired" buff: slower hp/mana regen. After 36hrs you suffer an additional slow buff attack rate buff. After 48 hrs you have -mana regen and cannot attack.
This doesnt make it neccesary to sleep but very essential.

ok, wel the time period will be reduced. what about 24 minutes in a day? making each minute equal to an hour?

with sleeping, it will give an effect of drowsyness which gives players a slower movement and attack rate, i already have the sleep system planned out.

i am offering this as more as a multiplayer enviroment... which is why it uses save load codes.

during the game you are offered multi sided quest in which it will determine what you are alinged with.

this game is strongly inspired by fable.

Sounds good to me...

alternatively i could make a person age over each week instead of each day, allowing the sleep be more sucessful... or i could just remove the sleep trigger completely.

How do you plan to make them age? What visible effects will be shown?

Removing sleeping is, I believe, the best option; because otherwise, the player has nothing, absolutely nothing to do for a considerable part of game time, nad that sucks. The gameplay already seems to be designed for more patient players, it would suck if it got too boring for them too.

If you make characters age a year in one week, then you should consider shortening the lenght of one day to 10 or 5 minutes. Otherwise, 24 minutes sounds good per day/year.

yes i know shorting the time of each day will be reduced if used a weelly aging.

i have decided to not include a sleep system because it will require to much time waiting etc.

u could speed up the time process .. and still set the XP gain, or whatever you have :)
so it would take like a minute to sleep, but half a day has past, or quarter :)

Wow. I really like that idea for a map. I guess for people who have lots of time on there hands.

Sounds great... Triggering, triggerin and oh look, more triggering :D Are you going to include "reputation" which you can gain/lose depending on actions you take through the course? Or some kind of karma system...? Would work, but it would also take more work.

The idea's great, and don't haste with the days/years, just include so much into the game that the players will enjoy it apart from beting monsters in wilderness.

hey logik, sounds like a great map. i assume you would have custom models? if your going to i could be a concept artist if you need one. just pm me if you decide to do the map. ps dont have any good drawings on the computer right now but im working on one that i really like so ill get it done and show it to you when i finish.

I, personally, could never finish a detailed map like that, so I hope you can. It's gonna take a long time ot make, and a lot of hard work. I say SP! MP is great, but if you start a game with 10 people, 1 will most likely leave, 1 or 2 won't load fast enough and drop, then 2 or 3 more will leave after 15 minutes, because they are bored. So I say SP, because of the Battle.Net leaver situation.
