TD: Tower Defense: build and keep enemy from reaching end (everyone should know about this...
AOS and DOTA: 2 Teams of 6 nuke it out sentinels against scourge or some other race

TD: a Tower Defence: you build towers to defend against creeps; those usually don't attack, but are just trying to get through. Many TDs include heroes as well. (examples: Wintermaul and many other "mauls" that copy it, a bunch of other TDs that are just to many to list here)

AoS: (DotA is an AoS type map) Two computer players each have a base and regularly send units at each other, most often in small waves. Then, each computer has a bunch of player allies who only control a hero and help the armies as best as they can. (other examples: Tides of Blood, tank commanders, Era of War (the last two aren't exactly something widely played, but it was the only other two I could name out of my head :)))

Arena: Just two teams of players, each controling a single hero, fight it out in an often circular map. Many arenas include dueling where two heroes fight in a seperate area occasionaly. (examples Angel arena, Gladiators)

Hero Defence/Survival: Similar to TD, but players only have one hero each and the enemies attack them. They must either defend a castle (Hero siege, various LotR maps), or prevent monsters from coming to the finish (Enfo's team survival).

Open RPG: Each player controls a hero and goes about killing creeps and leveling up, Diablo style. Players can fight together or kill eachother, or found a nation and build cities... (examples: Julien's RPG, COT, I'm not too familiar with the genre to name any others)

Almost forgot! Footmen wars: Each player has a main building that spawns footies (or any other base unit); you also get one hero and then it's time to see who can micro better/get the better upgrades/abuse the better heroes in a massive footmen fight.

Closed RPG: Similar to open, only it's not so free, but instead the players are supposed to work together to reach a story defined goal through a usually linear progression path.

Hmmm, I think I listed all the most important things. I definitely didn't list the most played examples of each genre, only those that came to my mind just now. There are, of course, many smaller genres or more or less unique maps that are out there, but didn't get listed here. There's Life of a Peasant and stuff like that, if there's anything else similarly popular to the main genres I listed above, I'm sure someone else will mention it.
