Some Knight Thumbs

Was bored again around 2 oclock last night, so I doodled. Again.

I think I'll use one of these as a base for a bigger picture.

1 was my warm up type thing.
2 was a cooler looking knight since I didn't like 1's helmet.
3 has kind of a difficult pose. He's supposed to be pointing his sword at you, but since this picture is like, 2 inches tall, it's kinda hard to see that.
4 is my favourite right now. I think I'll go off that concept. Maybe change the weapon but I like the sledge.
5 was my attempt at a mounted knight. The horse is too small I know.

4 is awesome. Actually there all very pro. If you put 2's cape on him he'd look tougher than a Blizz drawing. Well done !!! :D

Top-notch stuff.

I really like these thumbs, because although they look like they are quickly done and are so very small, talent and competence can be seen in them.

Don't be afraid to tackle difficult poses; that's how you grow. I like how I can see a progression in the design of the knights.

Indeed, that horse is too small (for a war steed, at any rate), and that lance is wrong. I don't think they put poleaxes on the tips of lances.

Anyways, I would very much like to see anything you develop from these thumbs. Keep it up!

actually, some did place them, they were meant to tear apart the front lines, and usually the front lines had tower shields, so its like, you either have to remove the shield and trample them, spear them before they can defend, or spear the shield and meat bag

but most of them didnt, so its like, ya

Thanks ogre. I appreciate your crits. I agree the lance looks funny, but then again I get my ideas from the weirdest places. The lance was from this disney cartoon I saw when I was kid, where Goofy fought a black knight with a lance like that. I dunno I thought it was cool.

EDIT

Been working on horses and studying their shape and stuff. A few sketches from various references.

The middle one front view was without ref obviously, because it sucks ass. Then I have a the other ones... I like the elvis hairdo thing on the front view horse. Then I was just playing around with armor designs and weapons and shit like that.

Woo hoo more thumbs. This page of sketches contains the smallest thumb yet. A mere 1 1/2 inches! Anyway, here. I rather like the horned helmet.

And an enlargement of the little dude.

Oh yeah and the horse's head still kinda sucks. Not many front view horse refs.

Well, the best I can give is "Wow, that's nice." Your latest infantry would be my favourite - I also like #2 on the first post.

Are you sure that's how it worked? I know I wouldn't want to hold my ground against charging cavalry if all I had was a tower shield. I think infantry's best defense against mounted cavalry were pikes, and the longer the better. Longer pikes led to longer lances, which in turn led to longer pikes, ad infinitum. Lances were skewering weapons; there wasn't a lot of lateral movement in it's attack, which was a thrust as opposed to a chop.

Not to say there weren't polearms that long, or that they were used no less! Highly unorthodox, though.

Anyways, I like the horse studies, and the fact that you are doing them. The first one's body is too large in comparison to its neck and head. The front views of the horses are nice.

I like the second page of recent thumbs. That axe is great, though it's back looks a little like an ice pick to me. Maybe remove those holes and seration on the back and revert to a traditional pick to make it look more deadly. That infantry looks pretty cool, though his posture is tilted. Move his torso back so his pelvis is thrusted out more to give him that cocky look. That helmet idea is neat, and I like that knight you have on the horse as well.

What would be really great is if you drew some side views of charging horses with mounted knights with lances, lowering the lance in preparation of wreaking hell. In various positions thereof.

Good stuff.

I think it would be more intimidating if he didn't have his head tilted, it's more curious that way then agressive.
Nice picture, his axe really draws you in with the flames and the moon blade.

The head tilting thing is a local thing in Hawaii I think. The big samoan or fillipino guys have that sorta head tilting thing like "you like fight wit me ya fuck?"

EDIT pidgin english is hard to type. It sounds... different...
