"HeroRPG" RPGs - Longevity?

NOTE: Placing in Map Development will make 90% of the people go "Huh?", so I'm posting it here.

Basically, I'm not sure what are people's opinions on how long they want to play an RPG for.

Ridiculously long

-Lots of "256x256" World Maps.
-Dungeons should be multiple "256x256" maps.
-Lots of content (summons, magic, items, etc.)
-More than one ending.
-To finish it, it'll take a lifetime.

Long

-More than 1 "256x256" World Maps, but not a lot.
-Dungeons should be multiple maps of any size.
-Many contents to unlock, but not as much as "Ridiculously long".
-To finish it, it'll probably take 50 hours.

Moderate

-One "256x256" World Map.
-Dungeons should be one "256x256" map.
-Content should only be placed in a linear fashion (for example, I HAVE to get a summon because the place I get it in is part of the storyline)
-About 25 hours of gameplay.

Short

-One "256x256" World Map, but less towns/dungeons/areas/etc.
-Dungeons should be less than "256x256".
-Content should only be placed in a linear fashion.
-About 10 hours of gameplay.

Gamers will vote for long or extreamly long.. they usualy don't think about how much time and effort it need, they think it can be finished in about one year.. when it's rarely the case. It takes 2 years for a studio like squaresoft with a big team of pro to create one single rpg.

Just to compare to HeroRPG, I had a script for at least 15 hours already made. Lot of interesting and fun idea but the development time is simply too much for one man. You need to write the script, do the terrain, do the trigger, the cinematic and lot of special thing to make everything original.

I personnaly hate doing terrain and cinematic, I love creating new trigger system tho. Since I had mostly completled the systems for my project and that I didn't had much interest in making more cin and action.. well you know what I did :)
I don't think I failed or canceled my project in any way.

I recommend working with chapter, you release each part after they are done and you add more if you are still motivated. Try to finish each chapter with a possible ending (not a too be continued if you prefer) so nobody will notice you stopped in the middle of your story.. personnal experience =P

Terraining is my favourite part of Warcraft. I could do it for hours just for fun. Cinematics, on the other hand, becomes extremely tiresome after doing hours of work. Anything that resolves around Object Editor and Triggers are hell to me.

Chapters might be good, and come to think of it, it would be grand idea! It would be something like changing CDs, like Final Fantasy 9 and Legend of Dragoon.

I agree. Gamers who don't know about what it takes to make a game usually complain about short games. I only said long b/c thats what I would want. I think the chapters thing is a great idea, and I think maybe a team of people could get together and make the first campaign using the hero rpg system.

I'll try to finish the basis of my battle demo so you can use the new and better system.

Ty. I think that by making this system we will be seeing a bunch of new rpg campaigns. I know I had one in the works w/ a really bad action based fight system, but now I'm waiting for you to finish ur system so my campaign will be better.

Well irealise that making this would take a long time

however the question was what do you WANT so i chose long (but multiple endings would stil lbe a good idea, ro do what they do in FFX-2 so that its the same video you jsut ADD to it the mroe you do)

But if your makeing a new 1 i have 2 things to say...

1: Is it going to be called "HeroRpg: Insert name" or just "Insert name"
2: If you would like help from me i will. I can some terrain buts its not very good. But i can do triggering...not jass but i can do standard triggering with variables and such....surprising what you can do with thriggers lol. And of cource storyline and concept are my MEGA specialty.

I voted "long". There should be alot of areas to explore, and a bunch of them hidden. So you will always find new ones.

I'm myself making a campaign based on this system. But still I'm stuck at rewriting the scirpt (Thought I think I've kept about 10 lines out of 1000 edited. And been writing like 1000 more ;)). I'm also using a "chapter" system. Each chapter will be a little story on it's own and play a role in the big storyline. Much like Diablo 2

I would want it to be somewhere between moderate and long, but not have it be strictly linear. I like side things like (I will use examples from FFIX) optional quests (Chocobo's Paridise), hidden items (Excalibur II), and especially uber bosses (Hades, Ozma).

I vote the same because it would be nice to play a long long campaign if u don't have internet. Just spending hours and hours building up your character, exploring new areas. As long as it don't take 3-5 years. Im cool to how long it takes.

P.S. Easter Eggs are always fun. You can place a ton or little bit of easter eggs in the gameplay. Players will make topics like I found this easter egg and others will hunt for them.

EDIT: Uhh I didn't like how FF X-2 worked. Real Time Based sorta took my interest away. And I kept getting this gay Purple Giant Boss attacking me when I was finding the clues in the beginning of the game. I never got pass him (rental game). I don't like leveling up without a storyline. I want to have fun trying to complete the quest while leveling up.

I would vote redicouly long. But hear me out.

By redicously long, I don't mean hours and hours on nonstop story, I mean, like maybe a simple, moderate length story, but maybe about 100 other things you can do. Kind of like GTA(not a RPG, but I am using it for an example). The story when you think about it is really short, but of all the side missions, and the other nearly endless possibilities, it can take a good 5 months to beat it. And when you do beat it(main storyline-wise), still be able to play it to be able to get all the side stuff done.

Know what I mean? This is kinda of what I am doing in my campaign(custom attack system as well, will be almost as customized as HeroRPG). Just have a short story, but allow for alot of other things to do. This also makes the game a bit more fun because the player feels like they can do almost anything. :D

Btw, my campaign will play like a Zelda game(C-targeting, press A to attack, and alot of other things of that nature :D).
