I have discovered, while dealing with the things that I do (networking/gaming/conversion/creation) that you can effectively reduce the size of your music files, without sacrificing alot of quailty. Problably the most standard type of Music is this: Joint-Stereo, 128kbps, 44,000(sample rate) ____ Joint Stereo (2 virtual channels) What many of you might not know is what Joint-Stereo means. Stereo is 2 seprate music sources that play music through 2 speakers simutaniously(sp). Mono is 1 Channel of music being split through any number of speakers. Joint Stereo, however, is 1 Mono Channel, that sounds like stereo. It does this by utlizing 2 channels, but only 1 music channel. The 2nd channel is a data stream that tells the player what music goes where. The music plays fast enough that you can not hear the difference, but still, it is not as good as stereo. The resuslt is a smaller file still retaining 2 virtual channels. Music ====== Guide ------ ____ Stereo (2 channels) Stereo is 2 completely seprate music channels that play 2 seprate tracks simultanously through 2 speakers. The result is double size but 2 seprate channels, which in turn gives you better quality. Music ====== Music ====== _____ Mono (1 channel) Mono is nice, because there is a small decrease in quality (having the sound smashed into one channel) and the size is essentially half of what it was. This is the key of the article. A 128kbps Stereo song is essentially the SAME quality(per channel) of a 64kbps Mono file. There we go. When converting to mono, you can half the bitrate. It is smart too, espically in wc3 songs. Music ====== ___ In Conclusion: Converting to Mono with Half the bitrate gives you same quality as the Stereo file was. With half the size. |

I'd like to differ that Joint stereo is the basic. Stereo is. If you get mp3s out of wc3 you can see for yourself that they do not use Joint stereo. Joint stereo sounds in fact real fake and strange compared to real stereo. Also mono makes it sound "dull" I dunno what kind of speakers your on, 2 or 4 or 5, but I use a 5.1 set and the difference is VERY noticable. |
