How do you get a custom mini-map picture like DotA ALLSTARS or 3.6?

Take an image and a photo editing program (pretty much any) and shrink the image to 256x256 or 128x128. than, save the picture as War3mapPreview.tga and import into the map you want the minimap preview for. then, double click War3imorted\War3mapPreview.tga and delete War3imorted\ so that it only says War3mapPreview.tga and press ok. now save your map, open wc3 tft (or w/e) and find your map, vua la, there is your new minimap preview screen. O an one more thing. In map Options, make sure that "Hide minimap in preview screens" is OFF! ^_^

Notice it must be TGA and not BLP. You need a program to change it to TGA like WC3 Viewer.

i dont get how you all are doing that. i've done everything exactly as everyone has said... i've tried 64x64 and 128x128 and 256x256 and it never works. i've named it properly, i've imported it.. i've changed the path to delete everything but the filename from the path. and every dam time i open warcraft and click on my map, i get one of those fatal exception errors and warcraft closes. i've even tried taking some popular maps and exporting their's and importing in mine just to see if it's a picture problem and it still crashes on me. what's going on?! :(

Make sure that you have the latest version of Warcraft III Reign of Chaos or The Frozen Throne (version 1.17 is latest). Fatal Errors/Crashes can occurr if something is done wrong in the map, there are certain trigger functions that just don't work properly when used in a specific way and can crash/fatal error WC3. I suggest try disabling all triggers (not deleting) and then see if this fatal error/crash continues.

i have the latest patch. i'm always playing random teams on ladder. heh.

anyhow, it can't be triggers! you know why? cuz this crashs the instant i click on my map in my list of maps to choose. so nothing is loaded yet. you know what i mean right? you see a list of maps.. and you can go up a directory and see folderrs.. find your map and when you click once on it, it shows you a minimap and discrip and lets you select computer players.. well the instant i click on my map, it gives me a fatal error and in that brief second before the window minimizes i never saw a pic show.. so i'm assuming while it was attempting to present the pic it failed. but i can't for the life of me figure out why cuz i copied everything. it's a tga.. it's 24 bit. hell, i've tried taking a pick from one of those popular maps like dota or something.. forget which, and looked exactly as they had it and did the same thing using their pic and it still happens. (and i wasn't tring to rip em off, just wanted to use something i knew already worked just to test)

and it's such a simple thing.

let me make sure i have this straight. i will use someone else's pic for an example. (just for learnings sake). i exported their War3MapPreview.tga and then i open my map.. click "import manager", then in there click "import file".. select the War3MapPreview.tga . then after it's in there, i right click it and "modify file properties".. and put a check besides "Use Custom Path".. then of the "war3mapImported\War3MapPreview.tga" that is there, i delete the "war3mapImported\" part and leave the "War3MapPreview.tga" part. then click Okay. save then try the map out and it crashes me the moment i select it in warcraft to play.

what did i miss? there's gotta be something else to do.. this is too simple to screw up. and other people's map shows up fine to me. i think it just doesn't like my map. surely existing triggers can't affect me selecting it it before playing.. no triggers are active til it loads.. but in this case i never even get a chance to hit the start button, much less select options before playing. it's instant fatal error. the only way to play the map is if i open Warcraft Editor and hit the "test map" button which bypasses preview screens.

Hm, can you upload the map here and let us try and figure out what's going on? I am sure that someone out there can get it straightened out. Maybe even me lol, but just upload the map here and expect an answer to as why this is happening soon ;)

The problem is easy..the War3mapPreview image is highly corrputed(from what the errors tell me lol), might I suggest allow one of us to convert the image you wish to use into .tga?
