Unwrapping HELP

i dont' get how to unwrap a model... i tried azn_whore's tutorial but it wasn't specific enough... and i also found multiple tutorials from www.3d-palace.com but i stilll don't get it...

the closest i got is to unwrap single polygons, i can't select all of the polygons at once and unwrap everything... if i unwrap 1 polygon by 1, i would end up with 20+ jpg texture for 3dmax... is there any way that i can unwrap everything at once?

Havent mastered unwrapping myself.....however if you dont mind spending 40 dollars you can get ultimate unwrap 3d which works with 3ds max. Its a nice program that will unwrap your models for you.

unwrappin isnt that difficult...im using 4.2 nd after fiddling w/ it fo bout 2 hours i kinda picked it up.

first u want to set a UV map for the part of the mesh u want to unwrap. I dont kno y but whenever i do this it comes out of scale sometimes, so i alwayz do a square. So in other words, i take the largest number (width or length) and make the smaller one the same as the larger one. so now u should have like a yellow square thing around one side of the model. Remember tho that that is the part of the model that u will see on ur unwrapping...kinda picture the square as a screen.

Now open up UV unwrapping and select "edit". You should see the object that u juss mapped. here u can make it smaller and larger. However, if u have two sided mappings (like you want the skin to be different on both sides) go to select faces on the unwrappin tab and select the faces u want to be mapped differently. Now go back to edit and press the red triangle like button on the bottom. some of the vertices should light up red as they are selected. Now right click and select 'detach edged vertices' nd move that part that u juss detached so it doesnt come in the way of the stuff that u didnt detach... scale them how u want and put the on the square so they dont collide w/ each other.

Juss do taht with all the skins u want to make...however, if u want more than one part per skin, juss organize them on the square even tho u cant see them all together in different spots. fo example if u have a foot and a leg put the leg unwrap on the left and the foot on the right in their OWN boxes. Afterwards selet all the parts that u decided for ONE sheet and press "export" export it as a .3ds and open it with lithunwrap.

***if u modify anything on lithunwrap make sure u save the model and import it back into .3ds...however i learned doign this drops the quality or something, and makes it ultra blocky***

Finally go under "file > UV map > save" and there u have ur skin...now juss go back and do it fo all the different sheets u want.

After all this, go back to warcraft open up material editor put the done skins in it...do all that stuff to make it w3 compatible (if u dont kno look at other turorial forums) and put the skin on the corresponding parts. Basically if u have a foot on the skin, put that skin on the foot.

hopes this helps,
neel
