I'm busy writing a tutorial on Cool Edit 2000 (Best for noise reduction), but the best I suggest at the moment is to use Goldwave (www.goldwave.com). Use the effects> Filter>Noise reduction and try out the two default filters. It helps if there's a piece of blank silence at the end of the sound (I'll let you work out why :)).

Magic, you are a very evil man.
Is there any soundprograms for free?

The quality software requires money I'm afraid. =: o)
It depends what you mean by 'free'. anyway Free as in it doesn't cost you any money to acquire, or free as in available to use for free. :P

Goldwave is free to use, but has a toll and it whinges on when you go over a limit. Your call.

Once you see what Cooledit and Sound Forge can do, you'll see the difference.
'Environment' sounds, as you puit it, can quite easily be removed in CE for one. Set up can be important - but that's just basically making sure your microphone cable doesn't touch much electric sources.

The easiest way to remove noise is to eliminate it during recording, not to clean it up after the fact.

What kind of noise are you looking to remove? Noise reduction filters often best at cleaning certain frequencies or frequency patterns (i.e. distortion, cracks, hisses, etc.) that are commonly associated with a certain type of noise.

I think CoolEdit and SoundForge have the same capabilities. The main bonus of Cool Edit is that its:

#1. Multi-track capable (which is great)
#2. Has more presets/varied presets than SoundForge by default.

If you're mic recording and noticing garbage, theres a few ways to prevent it. Plosives (the pa sound you get when your mouth is too close to the mic) can be reduced by:

#1. Getting a mic screen (sold at Guitar Center, etc.)
#2. Holding the mic farther away from your lips then boosting amp/volume in the editor (although this causes background noise to be more evident).
#3. Holding a piece of paper between your mouth and the mic. (this work way better than you think it would ;)).

Hope this helps,
