Is there an item, ability, or trigger that will give a unit an aoe attack? I can't find one, and i can't give an unit an aoe 2nd attack and switch to it.

orb of fire, that gives a splash damage attack... read the toolpits

also, if the unit is melee, you can use the cleaving attack ability

i tried to use orb of fire, but it didn't seem to do anything. I guess i'll just play around with it a bit more to see if i can get it to work, thanks. Other ideas are still appreciated.

Make sure to set the AOE to the distance you want, and set the %AOE damage to something that you can easily see in combat to make sure it works.

I messed around with it, and the aoe is only for the damage that the orb deals, not the total damage of the attack (which is why it didn't work at all the first time i tried, becaue I had bonus damage set to 0).

Edit:
Anybody have any more ideas?

Yes. Look at the ability the human gyrocopter (flying machine)? has. Customizing it will give a ranged unit splash damage, but not melee. Kind of a reversed cleaving.

The ability Orb of Annihilation that the destroyers use gives AoE. Maybe you could try putting the bonus damage to zero so then it bases off the units attacks.

i tried flak cannons, and orb of annihilation to no avail (the splash damage in each, as far as I could tell, was just the extra damage from the ability). I'm beginning to think that there isn't a way to do it.

You could, of course, make a duplicate unit that has a natural splash attack, and use Chaos to switch to the new unit when appropriate.

I thought about doing that a while ago, but I would have to make duplicates of about 60 units, so unless there is no other way i'm going to steer clear of doing that. Thanks for the input though.

Yea, a bunch of extra object data for so little game is a pain in the arse, both creation- and loading-wise, but if it's gotta be done, well.

Hey everybody thanks for all the help, I really appreciate it. I am either going to do what panto suggested or just not put it in my map at all (hopefully somebody will have a breakthrough so I won't have to do either).
