Power Coupling

Okay, in Star Wars Episode 1 there was a Pod Race. I am creating a map to simulate that race...My models are just about done, but I have a few issues. One is the power coupling in between the engines (The pink colored electrical beam holding the engines together). How can I animate it without making 3 or 4 small cyclnders and makeing huge amounts of animations? The second issue is can I make an animation called 'Turn Left' and 'Turn Right' which will only be played when called for from a trigger?

NOTE: Attached image shows the power coupling.

Check on the stasis ward: they use liketwo planes , divided each in 6 segments. Each segment moves into another direction in a global loop real fast, so it looks like they are fizzling. Imo that is the best bet (but a bitch to do, not that hard, but a bitch )

Aha, yes that does look like the best option. However, is there a way I could simply copy that exact animation? If its a royal pain to do, it might be easier to just copy it directly and stretch it. If not, could you direct me to a short explination on how to make that effect? I can do basic modeling no problem, but Im just starting with animation.
