Whistling S's

Hi everyone!

I've recently download audacity and started dinking around, practicing doing different voices and modifing them and such. So far, I've had fun and would like to improve enough so that I could lend my voice to future modding projects.

I have a problem, though. Whenever I make an 'S' sound, I whistle. In audacity, I can see it as a giant spike. So far, I've just been fading in or out the s sound to minimize it, but it bothers me when I talk now. I was wondering if anyone else had this problem and what you do to combat it.

I'd also like to say that I really enjoy downloading and listening to voice samples from you guys, you all have lots of talent.

Thanks in advance,
Metalman

You should try not to whistle, i duno how...
Well, if that won't help, there are special people, that cure that, with psihology and stuff like that

I dont know if this will help, but just try not to force your S's, if that doesnt work, try spaceing out your top row of teeth from the bottom when you make an S sound, actuly with that whole spacing thing, it made me sound like i had a speech error, so instead you could try to keep your tounge a little farther from your teeth or the top of your mouth ( being close to both of these i found could cause whistling).

I guess you'll have to practice different ways to pronounce the s, tho you'd notice that everyone whistles a little in the s (and I mean EVERYONE). If it keeps being a problem when recording, just select the s area and make a notch filter of around 100Hz width, and move it slowly through the frequency spectrum between 5000 and 9000Hz until you can't hear the whistle. Uh... sorry if this sounded too technical

Actually, I've been thinking about ir the last couple of days, and I noticed that everyone does whistle their S's. I guess I was just over-analyzing my sound file. I tried toning it down a little, but I'd end up with a lisp on the transition to the next word. Thanks for the replys everyone! ^_^

I don't know if Audacity has this feature, but an easy solution with Cool Edit Pro (Adobe Audtion) is to simply use the de-esser. It's a lifesaver. You can also try experimenting with compression.

my s's sound just the way i like them. you are who you are and if someone told you your s's are weird then i give you permision to shoot them in the face. we are who we are.
