mt first tip would be to use icecrown instead, the deepblue/dark green coulers in the northrend tileset are particularly ugly. however, if you are going to use it, id suggest staying well away from the northren trees, instead, try to find some high detail dead trees (there are probably one or two in the DL section). scale them up, so their a realistic size compared to the units. then use a mixture of the northrens rocks with the ashenvale rocks (tinted darker than normal, so they dont look like they belong in a tranquil forest as much), then use a small amount of plant life, such as mushrooms, and shrubs tinted to a very dark blue or brown couler (to give them the appearance of being almost dead)

my final piece of advice would be to specificly have a larger range on doodad scales than the standard blizz 0.80-1.20 scale. things like rock trees and plants always have a wide range of sizes in nature, so for explame, you may place one large dead tree,.with one or two much smaller trees just under its branches. with a handful of larger rocks around, and more smaller ones, to emphasise detail

for a ruined city, northren would probably be better, as it has more rock/dirt tiles.
icecrown is generaly better for terraining any open feilds covered in snow
