Alfred Langley was asleep, his unconcious mind weaving stories so complex and real, stories his concious mind could never fathom. He never remembered his dreams. But if he had the chance Im sure he would remember this one... Alfred stood on an empty street, a thick fog rolled low over the ground and the only thing he could see ahead of him were the street lamps. The city seemed lonely, as if nobody ever ventured outside for fear of an unseen force clinging to the fog, would swallow them alive and they'd never be seen again. The only noise to be heard was the wind, or so Alfred thought, a low note from a cello glided quietly through the air. it seemed as though the sad music called him, he took a step forward. The another, and another, until before he knew he had started walking he was standing next to a man in a dirty red suit and coat tails, the source of the music. The man's face wasn't to be seen, silver hair engulfed his face. He sat on an old wooden crate, his coat tails hanging limply off the edge. The ruffles of his silk shirt waved slightly in the wind, Alfred was fascinated by them, he didn't know why. He lifted his head slowly, and looked at the man. "What is this place?" Alfred asked. The man looked up at Alfred, he didn't stop playing, "You needn't know that yet Alfred, you will find out in time..." his voice trailed off as if he was walking away. He looked back down at his cello and continued to play. Alfred noticed he stood next to a cathedral, he walked away from the man playing the cello, the music stopped. Alfred looked back, "Beware of this and that..." the man said. "I don't understand." Alfred replied, the man looked back down at his cello and continued to play. Inside the cathedral stood a priest, he wore robes of black and stood stock still. "We've been expecting you Alfred." the priest said without looking up. "How do you all know me?" The priest looked up, he had bags under his eyes, he obviously hadn't slept for days, "You needn't know that yet Alfred, you will find out in time..." Alfred looked at the priest, frustration starting to take him. "You all keep telling me this, when will I find out?" The priest looked down at is bible. "The time is come Alfred... If you wish to delay it, run , run far away. You will see him soon..." Alfred chose not to ask the priest what was coming, because for some reason he knew that he wouldn't like the answer. He took the priest's advice and ran out of the cathedral. The man with the cello looked up, "That's it Alfred run! Run from the inevitable, like so many others..." Alfred ignored the man and kept running. He came to the gates of the city, a huge raven sat atop the iron gates. "Beyond the field a city dead, run there fast don't loose your head. Evil lurks among the corn, the very things that God did scorn, for evil do and faith now lost, their souls now lay among the rot, gaunt voices sing forget me not!" Alfred didn't quite understand the birds poem, but he decided to heed it's advice nonetheless. He pushed open the gates, the raven flew to the gnarled branch of a nearby tree. With one last look at the bird Alfred took to the path. Many a dead animal layed on the path, Alfred noticed something large and human like looming up in the darkness, he decided to run faster to attempt to bypass the obviously evil being. As he ran fast he noticed it had a pumpkin as a head, he stopped. "A scarecrow! It was merely a scarecrow!" The scarecrow fell to the ground with a thud, Alfred's face fell. From the corn came a tall slender man, atop his head a goats skull worn like a crown, black and purple robes hung off his body."Do not forget me! As so many others have, I turned my back on God and he has damned me to be forgotten! Spread the word! Spread the word of my exsistance!" A rustle came from the corn behind Alfred. A woman this time, her skin was grey and her long black hair hung over her face, she had claw-like finger nails and simply screamed at Alfred when he looked at her. "Remember!" Both of the figures grabbed out at Alfred, he began to run. He soon came upon a graveyard, full of catacombs and mosoleums. "My god no...I have been tricked! A figure robed completely in black stared down at Alfred, upon his head a helm like crown, long metal spikes rose up from the forehead of the crown and it came down around the figure's head, hiding it's face completely, a black metal gauntlet emerged from the sleeve of it's robes. "Indeed Alfred, you have been decieved, come with me, you cannot turn back now, the forgotten now block your path." Alfred looked behind him, the figure was right, the forgotten had made a half-circle behind him, his escape was impossible. "Do you know who I am Alfred?" asked the figure in black. "N,n,no...i don't..." Alfred responded. "I, am Lucifer, Satan, the Devil, call me what you will, but I am your demise Alfred, follow..." Alfred had no choice, he followed Lucifer, into a Mosoleum, Lucifer opened one of the doors, the space inside was miniscule, maybe 3 feet across, 2 feet high and 7 feet long. He would have to lay down, Alfred slid into the small space, and the door was shut behind him, he heard the lock slide into place, Alfred struggled and yelled for a few minutes, until a thick grey gas filled the chamber, and Alfred was asphyxiated... No one had heard from Alfred in two days, so his neighbor Joanne decided to check his house, the door was locked but she knew where the key was hidden, her and Alfred were old friends. She got the key and turned the lock, when she entered the house she noticed a hideous smell, the smell of rot. She checked every room in the house calling Alfred's name. When she checked his bedroom she found him dead in his bed. He had obviously been thrashing around she wondered what had happened, tears welled up in her eyes. She called the police to report a dead body. A day later when they did an autopsy on Alfred's body, they found that Alfred had un-diagnosed lung cancer, and he had died in his sleep... |

I have wondered for quite some time what a dream would be like if you died in your sleep. This is my spin on it. I hope you like it. |
