Hey, i've got a little problem. I have bought a fine book lately about sketching and there is a drawing how to hold pencil in your hand... i'm not really sure... it's pretty hard for me... Could you write/show me how you hold your tool? |

Preferably with the hand. But you can try to hold your pencil with a foot, if the pencil is properly designed for this use. |

I think everybody has another "style" of holding the pencil, and the picture in ure book is simple the one of the autor, so just hold it that u feel its best for u, dont try to imitate someone. |

But i try to hold it like a pen when writing... in my book it's written that it's bad... i really cannot understand it so i thought u can help me :( Maybe i just should practice this style a bit longer Here's the image [not from my book but the same style of holding] ![]() Help me plz! |

I hold the pencil totally wrong. Even for writing. Works for me though. Doesn't work the right way. :P |

I think that guy sucks. Lol I dunno every1 draws like hes holding his pen when writing in general. That way is the way i use when shading with the side of my pencil or something... |

If it's working for you, why change it?. Why not experiment and see for yourself firsthand? I hold my pencils, brushes, stylus, etc. the same way I was tought when I was in elementary school. Resting on the end knuckle of my middle finger, the index finger on top, and the thumb on the side. I have heard of the underhanded method you've shown there, but I don't care for it. It requires arm movement rather than wrist movement, so it is well-suited for larger drawings. Try it out if you want. I know you won't be as good with it as what you're used to for lack of experience, but it might turn out that you like it better or that it works for you. It adds a more gestural feeling to the drawing. What will you lose from trying? |

also, holding it like that makes you draw smoother lines on a bigger (vertical) seface then the 'normal' way of holding a pencil. but when drawing on a table, use the 'elementry school' technique, its perfect and fine. the pictah of your book just describes the best way of doing it standing up. |
