I am a noob and I'd like to know what kind of screenshot I should post. Should I pick the best features of the map?(pics small areas) Or should I give a general idea of what it looks like?(pics of a large part of the map)

PS I'd like to get some feedback on this screenie from my martian map.

hmm, what i like to see in a terrain is the general idea of it but doesn't lose its details.

anyway, for your terrain i think it's pretty bland. add more details to it. more stones, some volcanoes, etc. and it is pretty flat also, not mentioning that it needs some tile variations too.

some more work and then i'll like it. :D

It all depends on the terrain on how you should take the screenshots. It could be that because of an area's setup, it looks amazing from one angle, but from all others it looks worthless. Some things may look better only as a far-off shot, and some only from close up. I always enjoy it when someone can pull off an area that looks well-balanced (not too cluttered or too empty) from far away and in closer, more detailed pictures.

Regarding your terrain, what divine_peon said goes for me too. I also think it lacks a real focal point, which will usually bug me. Add something especially interesting in part of it to make it more interesting as a whole. And it's also extremely important, do not let that ugly black boundry show. Never let that show, unless you have some specific purpose for it.

looks pretty basic. im going to give you a lot of advice, but remember its only advice. to make a good terrain, its needs to be unique, which it can only be if the concept is yours

firstly, id suggst starting with something simple, that yeilds good results. make a new custom model. give it max and min scale equal to 1-2.5 (roughly) then change its model (art-model file) to a buff/ability model of your choise (but preferably something red or yellow). then place lots of them, and raise them up into the air (ctrl+pgup, ctrl+pgdown for lowering). make the fog thicker, and change its couler to a darker red (scenario>map options. the closer the start and end values are togeather, the thicker the fog) and set the time to night (scenario>map preferances).

youre terrain overall is quite flat. id suggest adding some kind of landmark to your terrain. a mountain, or a cliff (generaly the bigger the better). moutains are simple, just make sure you haver the miscdata.txt patch (if not, check the essential terrain tools and downloads thread). if you wish to create some kind of cliff. youll need to mark out the area with the outland water (void) that you want to be lower. then raise the land not covered by void, by useing raise and plateu. then smooth the cliff area. add some of the floating rock cunks, and raise them. so they hover over the void at roughly the same leval as the top of the cliff.

youre doodad usage could be better. i think more doodad scaleing could help this terrain a lot. firstly, look through all the outland doodads, and place any that you think look suitable for your terrain. i expet youve probably got the outland rocks, and archways. id suggest letting these be the basis of your terrain (as its outland, you cant use plants, trees, and very few type of structures).

firtly, copy the rock model, and paste it 3 times. this way, you have 4 rocks doodad. each will have a differant scale. 0.5-1.5 | 2-4 | 4-6 | 6-9. firstly, take the largest rock doodad, and place a few throughout the terrain (more around land marks, such as on the edge of a cliff, or up the side of a mountain). then take the next size down, and do the same again. then carefuly place the seconed smallest rocks in groups around the largest rocks. repeate tese two steps with all the rocks (depending on wether or you not you want an crowdd or more open terrain, use more or less rocks)

well, thats just some general advice for the basis of a terrain. i hope this helps

Thanks a lot for the feedback guys. I'll continue to post my personal creations to get constructive critism from you! I'm looking to enter that weekly terrain thing!

I can only encourage you to join Weekly Terraining as soon as possible. it's a good exercise for upcoming terrainers and the themes are versatile, you can also use WT as a reference base to check out how other people terrained various settings.

Check out the older WT's, some of them has a lot of cool attachments.

How can I hide the boundaries? Is the only way to hide it is to take screenshots that just dont show them?

it's in the map properties click the tab that says map boundaries then when you're there click the arrow buttons to remove it.
