Using a "still" projection to possess enemies?

I was wondering if there was a way to make a Possession, where it doesn't follow a unit, but instead, goes in a strait line, and then possesses the first enemy unit in the way. Is that possible?

But it would be better if you could make the unit ethereal when you use the ability, then it would look like you fired both the body and the spirit into someone. Is this possible?

It would be very interesting if I could put this spell/ability into a certain map I would like to make.

it would probably have to be done as a unit turned into a projectile, checking and moving it every 0.04 seconds or something

I believe this could be done using an existing attack that acts the way you want, setting it's damage etc. to 0, and using a trigger to detect units being attacked by it. Then just use the trigger to possess them.

theres no line based existing attack that disappears upon hitting a target
