My New Project! and i need help...

Hello! My name is Rod...and one of my hobbies is developing computer games (really simple ones since i am an amateur ) I have used the Game Maker engine to make 2 games already and i am working in my third one, which is a platform game, and almost about to finish it.

Now i wanna go all the way to 3D and i wanted to know if this idea of mine is possible...

Well, now to the GOOD STUFF...my project even though i have just started doing the units concepts and it may be a while till the "game" is out... is a Heroes of Might and Magic game. Actually is basically a remake of HOMM III since i am a BIG fan of the series ^_^ I am planning to re-do the whole game in the warcraft engine (meanning it will be turn-based of course), add new unit concepts and even some new towns. The trick is i don't really know if it is entirely possible to do this, another concern is if there is any way of making a STAND-ALONE game, instead of a TOTAL CONVERSION.

If anyone could answer me this 2 questions and maybe give me some pointers we would really appreciate it. Thanks for your time

First of all, you don't sound like someone who has the trigger skills to make a turn based system. Second, this should go in team gathering.

I didn't see him recruiting people... He asked for help in answering questions.

As for making it turn based. My advice: Don't. I have been playing with the idea of that type of map, but making it turn base would kill it. You would never, never finish playing a game. Seriously, even more so in an 8 or 10 player game.

I would: Make units/buildings move, attack, and build very slow, so it will be a "slow-paced game" like a turn-based, but not where you have 1 person playing for 1 minute, then waiting for 9 minutes while the other 9 players move.

You could have each play do their turns at the same time. or use a time tick system.

The answers to your questions are yes it is possable to make a turn based system. As others have mentioned it isnt easy but its possable. We could do it but the only resion we would would spend the effort is if it added a lot to the playability. In your case we dont think it would. Heroes of Might and Magic could be playable as a RTS. Kohan did a very good job of taking turn based concepts and putting them into a RTS. Not impressed with their latest ver but the first two where great.

To make a stand alone game with the WC3 engine would only be possable with a lot of programing skill (beond what is required to use the editor) and would most likely violate the licence. Again possable but not worth it.

Well, thanx for your help...and by the way, the reason i don't sound like i got skill in programming is cause i don't really have any I mean i only know how to do really simple stupid things. I am in the most part the one in the graphics department ...

About "killing" the game by making it a turn-based... I don't think it would technically kill the game. HOMM is an excellent game, it is turn based and has huge maps, and they do take forever to finish. But that is the beauty of it...i guess you guys don't like turn-based strategy as much as i do i really like the idea of having each player have the "turn" at the same time, but i got to talk to my friend (the team coder) since he is the one that will be doing all he hard work ^_^ ok...thanx again for your help and i'll be posting things regarding this project...maybe i could gather some fans ;) ok... i'll see ya guys later,

Turn based things are fine for playing as long as its simple elegant and quick. I would think this would be better as a single player map though,
Unless HOMM is mainly a multiplaya game, i dont know havent played it, then just go for it.
