Storm, how bout you give credit to the real artist that you blatantly copied. You simply moved the arms and stretched the legs apart a bit. Aside from that, you need to stop shading like that. You just make one shade over a large area and dont define the form at all. Also, before you start copying art you need to start doing anatomy studies to be able to draw heads from diffrent views, even if youre drawing cartoony... |

hes making a study of nava, you fool that doesnt mean hes 'blatantly copying' an artist. 'copying' art is a great way to practice style, anatomy, dramitic poses, anything. you dont *have* to study anatomy to make an anatomically correct drawing, plus, in this kind of art anatomic correctness is not that big of a deal, its not a bad thing if a ghost looks a bit unreal, in fact, it ads to the effect. so why dont you offer some real advice, i see what you did as plain flaming. you are right on one thing though, the shading could use some work to make it more interesting. pic of a hawt pencil-shade nova! good luck, draw on. |

He made no mention of attempting to study the art and im sorry if you dont mind but with all the stuff going on here, like the people taking crits as flames, people getting red rep for critting, every single error being written off as a style you cant be too surprised if someone gets agitated. Also, I am sorry that you dont think anatomical studies are neccesary to draw people, but if you feel like trying to do without go right ahead. Using reference and doing studies is the fastest process to learning any art because afterall, any style is a mere alteration to the real thing. Certianly, you can learn without but it is far more effective and efficent. Crits are about developing so please dont be angry with me for pointing out the quickest way of developing in your art. I am also curious where the flames came in? I told him to not copy artists without consent and credit, and gave him crits. Other people will post complimenting him without making crits, so I dont feel its neccesary for me to. |

efficiancy efficianshmy. you know whats efficiant? using the 'enter key' every once in a while so your post is more pleasing to the eye. who cares whats more efficiant, isnt it about whats more fun? |

Heh, im glad you only replied to one part of my entire post. Anywho, certianly art is about fun, but im not giving him advice on how to enjoy himself, im giving him advice on how to draw. |

omg that 1st picture of nova erwt posted is teh awesome. I love that artist Jason chan. We all need to relax, sit on the couch and light up a doobie. . i think you have to work with real facts and references to learn. Drawing from your head...It's fun but you really will learn nothing. It's like a baby trying to learn english by himself without going to school or books. The technical part of art is like a science. A science of visual nature and a liittle bit of design. anatomy, form, colors, poportions, shapes, values. All these elements are from nature. You look at anything In real life and you can see all these elements. This is why alot people say If you want to improve study from nature, and I kind of agree You have to realize that Ideas just don't pop out from your head out of nowhere. They get in your head by something from outside(nature). I think some people think there creative, because they draw from their mind. "o im creative because i can come up with things from my mind without reference". Really they are just recalling things they have seen, and remebered. Everything you think of is referenced, and nature is the best reference! I really belive there are "reasons" why something looks a certain way. Why something looks appealing or something looks ugly, or why a picture makes you feel scared,happy,sad,etc... It's all psycholigical and it's all done on purpose. There is really alot of subtle technical stuff that alot people don't notice going behind the style and Idea or content. When you watch a movie you feel scared why? you don't know why. In reality the artist did some thing on purpose to make you feel that way. It's like 50 percent idea and 50 percent technical. Once you stop thinking style and content, and think more realistically (reasons for things) then I think your art will improve like crazy. Stop thinking this or that style is good, and think more "why" is this style good. And I definately agree with ertwt, Art should be Fun!. That is the most important thing. More important then idea/style or technical skills. I don't know what i just typed or what point I was trying to make. Please don't mind anything I say. I guess Im bored |

you are making a valid point, my art teachers would lub you. they've been trying to teach that to me for like... forever... but yes like i said, playboy can be a great and seriously fun reference to female shapes and interesting poses ;) |
| 05-30-2005, 07:48 AM | #14 |
Yes it can! playboy is awesome. it can show you what plp find appealing and shit. Ill post some a ref site where it has some good playboy refs from 1960 to present. Just try to think of it like this, any additional information can help. i cant see how additional info can hurt you. More info, more tools you have in your aresenal. Theres no rules. Just take in the good and leave out the bad, and use your own good judgement. As Chris rock once said. "Listen! let it twirl around in your head for a little while ,and then form an opinion. It wasn't the exact words, but close. Im just saying maybe what your teachers are teaching you, Perhaps...just perhaps might be usefull information. |

Well... I plenty agree with erwt and kimchi. And yes, anyway even our thought are based on our experience, on what we learned: logical situations, feelings, etc. And yes, Art should be fun. I must say, I'm always really happy when I take my pencil and think: "I'm gonna draw something new". :D As for my picture. I'm not sure, but I suppose kirtar meant I copied chan's pic. That's simply wrong, even if I actually used references for drawing this (mad's nova wallpaper and, yeah, that pic by jason chan) The arms, the legs, the head, the lower part of the body are absolutely different. I can see 2 common points: -it's the same charater. -it is front view. I know the chest of my nova is very similar to the chest of chan's one... but I mostly copied the design for the armor pad of this part of mad's nova. bleh :p Quote:
Thanks :) That's what i'm about to do. ^^ |
