Is it random, or is it part of their stratergy?

Picks in the same way normal heroes are picked.

Each hero has a certain chance of being picked based on the priorities in the heroes.txt file.

e.g. lets say farseer has rp 5 but beastmaster has rp 25 - meaning beastmaster is more likely to be chosen.

Strategies can provide bonuses on a certain heroes rp to increase likely hood the hero is chosen in that strategy.

@xfxgsun: AMAI already supports picking neutral heroes. Try playing in the Turtle Rock map.

Hero Usage Reports

Hero selection is more random these days than it ever has been, if memory serves. Viable strategies are being built around all of the heroes now.

Neutral hero choice may not seem as even as race heroes, until you consider past dominance of NE/Beastmaster, Brewmaster, Naga, etc during prior patches. Its a pretty even spread now.

And yeah I know there are stronger preferences on other more gosu gateways than Azeroth =p

I hope though that AMAI has or will someday have second (neutral) hero selection based on specific strategies and/or as a hard counter in response to an opponent's race/strat/tactics.

If you want a certain hero to be used more often as first hero with this strategy it should be selected here. Note though that that will only have an influence if this strategy is chosen as starting strategy.

First hero bonus amount recommended: 10 to 30
How high priority boost you want to give this hero as first hero. If you want to enforce a certain hero, use a very high value.

Second hero bonus
This is the same as the previous 2 settings but for second hero.

Second hero bonus amount recommended: 10 to 30
Priority boost for the selected hero to be used as second hero.
Set these variables to very high values (e.g. 1000). And from now this strategy has two fixed heroes. Some retail strategies already use this opportunity.
What do you miss else? :)

@calmb4storm: Thanks for the link! Looks like a preview of the next next Warcraft III patch.

Like what they did to Starcraft: they balance the game also based on how frequent spells are used. In the case of Warcraft, how frequent the heroes are used, and then look at what could be improved to heroes.

I remember that around Starcraft 1.07 or 1.08, the patch focused on encouraging the use of spells like Queen ensnare, Lockdown, Arbiter spells. (Definitely NOT Psi Storm! hahaha)

I guess heros built to counter a specific strategy would be interesting. Especially if stats do start getting more random. Although looking at some of the gosu realms as you say shows massive usage still of one certain hero. Almost 50% for the first choice heros and 25% for top neutral hero.

I agree with thenonhacker. Definatly could be a preview of what stats gosu realms turn into next patch. Lets hope in any case.
