You've done it properly but did you edit/check the map by using edit command in the campaign edit, or did you just open it up from world edit.

You should use campaign edit.
1. Open Campaign Edit
2. Load your campaign
3. After it is loaded, on the right you will see the maps you have put in.
4. Click on the map (The one that you want to edit) so that it highlights your map name
5. After you do Step 4, you should see that some buttons\Commands in your toolbar becomes available. (Remove Map, Edit Map, Export Map)
6. Click on the "Edit Map" Button and world edit should open up the map.
7. Object Editor and you should see it's name(the unit's name) under campaign, highlighted in blue.

P.S I was trying what you did when I wrote this and it works, I created a unit named Grand Paladin, well it's just a normal Paladin. Open it up(The map)from campaign edit and it works!!

Note: These steps can also open up the "Demo Campaign Maps" that is under the Campaigns Folder.

Extra: Talking about Campaigns, you should download QMPQ ( I'm not sure if the name is QMPQ), it could open up MPQ files. Use it to open WarXLocal and will get all the TFT Campaigns. Open War3 MPQ, you get all ROC Campaigns.
