Yeah, I'm drawing about 4-5 months right now and I must ask I have never tried to draw something realistic (like people) exactly from my mind, from my imagination... I think i should but i dont feel self-confident. Should i try to crate using my imagination or should I still draw basing on photos or reality? |

I started off by copying DBZ which is bad. You should do life drawing first and then from the realism make your style. So pick up a magazine and flip de pages or search for some pics on internet and draw them with shading or not wateva just practice drawing the human face/body. You then should draw hands/ feet, anatomy. Then you should focus on clothes or objects then you can combine those two sections to create things outta your mind. Always keep references at hand for source of ideas and... reference. |

The thing I have found is keeping a healthy mix is extremely important. I dont know about you, but this is what works for me because if I dont draw imagination at all, I get rusty, and if I draw no ref, I dont improve at all. Whenever you draw something from ref your understanding increases, and so your art does get better, but the thing with imagination drawing, is if you do too much of it without understanding it becomes a subconcious habbit and you begin to make the same mistakes not only in imagination drawing but also in ref drawing. Its hard to try and know when its good to draw from imagination or when its good to draw from ref, but its really just a thing you shouldnt put too much thought in. If you dont have any refs handy, just draw from imagination, and if you do have a ref then use it. Try using also varities of refs to keep yourself interested. Personally, I find ref drawing extremely interesting and rewarding as I see myself grow every time I make an attempt, but thats really not for everyone. Im sure this paragraph made no sense whatsoever. |
