Targeting Trees with an Item Ability

How could this be done? How could an item ability target a tree? I have tried setting the "targets allowed" to "tree" and I have tried changing the trees "Targeted as" to something else, but nothing seems to work. Can a tree be just attacked, without harvesting -ability?
