Troll Wars Mod- Building Team Now

What the mod's about:

The Troll Wars, which are alluded to in some WarCraft texts. The Troll Wars took place roughly 50 years before the first Orcish invasion (WCI Orcs v Humans). The Troll Wars begin when the King of Azeroth creates the Troll Containment Act. This allows humans to hunt down and kill Trolls for a reward. The disperate Troll clans united to face this threat. Chief Harraxe, however, was not pleased that he was not made a warlord. He took his Blood Axe clan and broke off from the coalition. He began to carry on his own war in Southeast Azeroth with his elite Blood Axe clan. You take control of Harraxe and his clan for the first campaign. The second campaign puts you in the shoes of Colonel Roham as he commands Task Force Talon. The Trolls continually push north from Azeroth, and it has become necessary for the human, Dwarven, and Elven nations to form an alliance. Task Force Spear is created using elite units from all the different nations. The task force was specifically created to counter Harraxe and his elite clan. This campaign will take you to locations all over the eastern continent of the world of Azeroth.

The mod will also have a full-fledged single-player melee mode (if Blizzard opens Bnet to mods, we will have multiplayer as well), with either 4 or 8 factions.

First off: damn you. Our clan has a thread on making a Troll Wars AoS right now, and it appears you are beating us to the punch, lol.

Hm...seems like you need a historian too.

The Troll Wars were between the Elves and the Trolls, not the Humans and the Trolls. Or it Colonel Roham an elf? Didn't seem like it...

Although Blizzard appears to have given free reign to any mappers who want to recreate the Troll Wars, the least you could do is not break what groundwork they already have.

"As the high elves crossed the rugged, mountainous lands of Lordaeron, their journey became more perilous. Since they were effectively cut off from the life-giving energies of the Well of Eternity, many of them fell ill from the frigid climate or died from starvation. The most disconcerting change, however, was the fact that they were no longer immortal or immune to the elements. They also shrank somewhat in height, and their skin lost its characteristic violet hue. Despite their hardships, they encountered many wondrous creatures that had never been seen in Kalimdor. They also found tribes of primitive humans who hunted throughout the ancient forestlands. However, the direst threat they encountered were the voracious and cunning forest trolls of Zul'Aman."

Here the Elves intrude upon the lands of the Trolls, who seek to repel all invaders. They make a grevious mistake by founding Quel'thalas upon an ancient Troll city that they held to be sacred. The Trolls attack en masse and immediately.

"The stubborn elves, unwilling to give up their new land, utilized the magics which they had gleaned from the Well of Eternity and kept the savage trolls at bay. Under Dath'Remar's leadership, they were able to defeat the Amani warbands that outnumbered them ten to one."

And there ends the first "skrimish", not the true Troll Wars, but a precursor.

"For nearly four thousand years the high elves lived peacefully within the secluded safety of their kingdom. Nevertheless, the vindictive trolls were not so easily defeated. They plotted and schemed in the depths of the forests and waited for the numbers of their warbands to grow. Finally, a mighty troll army charged out from the shadowy forests and once again laid siege to the shining spires of Quel'Thalas."

And thus the Troll Wars begin.

"As the high elves fought for their lives against the trolls' fierce onslaught, the scattered, nomadic humans of Lordaeron fought to consolidate their own tribal lands. The tribes of early humanity raided each other's settlements with little heed for racial unification or honor. Yet one tribe, known as the Arathi, saw that the trolls were becoming too great a threat to ignore. The Arathi wished to bring all of the tribes under its rule so that they could provide a unified front against the troll warbands."

As you can see, in the beginning, the Humans did jack diddly, to be blunt. They didn't start the war with a "Troll Containment Act". Strike one.

"United under one banner, the human tribes developed a strong, optimistic culture. Thoradin, the king of Arathor, knew that the mysterious elves in the northlands were under constant siege by the trolls, but refused to risk the safety of his people in defense of reclusive strangers. Many months passed as rumors of the elves' supposed defeat trickled down from the north. It was only when weary ambassadors from Quel'Thalas reached Strom that Thoradin realized how great the troll threat truly was."

Finally, after the Arathi conquer all the other human tribes, *and* construct their capitol, Strom, *and* develop a powerful civilization, do the Humans even come into the war:

"The elves found that although humans were innately clumsy in their handling of magic, they possessed a startling natural affinity for it. One hundred men were taught the very basics of the elves' magical secrets: no more than was absolutely necessary to combat the trolls. Convinced that their human students were ready to aid in the struggle, the elves left Strom and traveled north alongside the mighty armies of King Thoradin."

The Humans' only contribution in the Troll Wars is immolating the entire Troll army.

"The united elf and human armies clashed against the overwhelming troll warbands at the foot of the Alterac Mountains. The battle lasted for many days, but the unflagging armies of Arathor never tired or gave an inch of ground before the troll onslaught. The elven lords deemed that the time had come to release the powers of their magic upon the enemy. The hundred human magi and a multitude of elven sorcerers called down the fury of the heavens and set the troll armies ablaze. The elemental fires prevented the trolls from regenerating their wounds and burned their tortured forms from the inside out."

The Humans show no mercy, eliminating the Troll army down to the last man.

----------------------------------------------

Okay. So the holes in this story are:
The Elf/Troll war pre-human involvement. There you would have free reign.
The precursor is a bit open, you can go into detail there.

The seemingly obvious game opportunities are:
The Elven attempt to hold off the Trolls before the Humans can arrive.
The Human journey through the ways of magic.
The Troll attempts to repel the Elvish intruders.

So...?
Play as, um, the Bloodaxe clan chieftan in the initial precursor-war attempting to repel the Elves, ending in failure.
Play as one of the Elven Archmagi (or the equivalent) in their attempt to raise the Runestones while under siege.
("Therefore, they decided to mask their lands within a protective barrier which would still allow them to work their enchantments. They constructed a series of monolithic Runestones at various points around Quel'Thalas which marked the boundaries of the magic barrier. The Runestones not only masked the elves' magic from extra-dimensional threats, but helped to frighten away the superstitious troll warbands as well.")
**After 4,000 years of peace, the Trolls return.**
Perhaps play as the descendant of the Bloodaxe clan chieftan. You would have to shift the angle entirely--possibly the descendant is a caster instead of a warrior, and has different ideals and guidelines that he lives by.
Finally play as one of the Human mages in his quest to master the fundamentals of magic, and also to destroy the Troll army.

----------------------------------------------

Mmmkayyyy....

So basically I just dissed your storyline entirely, then analyzed your mistakes, gave you the real one, gave you my "professional" opinion on which parts of the storyline could be expanded and used in a map, and handed you an optional idea for a new storyline for a Troll Wars campaign. All without even being on the team. This calls for a disclaimer.

I didn't mean to offend you, I wouldn't mind being on the team, as long as you have an open spot for a brainstormer ("idealist" as someone once put it, lol...), I don't care if you use my storyline, I don't care if you disregard it entirely as long as you don't flame me, and just generally...I...guess I wish you luck. Lol.

EDIT: Hm...fixed a paragraph mistake and a spell error, and just one thing to add:

Although I said I wouldn't mind being on the team, I just want to reinforce the concept that I'm entirely neutral on the subject. I don't care either way, and I hope you don't think I was ever asking to be on the team. Just, if you need someone, w/e. If you think you can handle it on your own, (and you team seems large and capable) good luck, and I will play your campaign when it comes out.

EDIT: Egads! Another thing. The Dwarves awaken 300 years after the end of the Troll Wars. Come on, really...do your research >_<

Before you get mad... read the post below this one immediately after.

Where in the world are you getting your info from b/c I got mine from Blizzard and it's pretty contrary to what you just said. My info says that it started in Azeroth due to a proclamation from the king there. That's about the extent of what I've got from Blizz.

Anyways, if you read my post, you'd see that Colonel Roham is the HUMAN Colonel who is the main character for the 2nd campaign (which is from the Human PoV).

Chief Harraxe is the main Troll character (whom you take control of in the first campaign).

You obviously didn't even read my post.

Wait a minute. I think I might know what you're talking about. My information also mentioned an earlier troll wars, but it wasn't called the Troll Wars. It actually specifically said that they were NOT (actually in caps) the Troll Wars. I forget what the name for it was exactly, but it was Troll Raids or something. My information is a little old (released just after WCIII, but before WoW). If this is indeed from the WoW texts though, I'd be willing to shift the title and call it the 2nd Troll Wars. It's quite possible that Blizzard decided to make that first war (or 2nd if you count the Elves driving the Trolls out), or the main Troll Wars. As I noted before, my info is old, and sadly I don't have WoW (don't want to pay the monthlies), but I did ask those who have it if there was anything in it about the Troll Wars, and all the replies I got were negative.

If you can confirm that the information you have presented is indeed accurate and from Blizzard, please do and I'll shift my story a bit (but my info still speaks of a war about 50 years b4 WCI, so I'm still going to use that one, but I will take into account the previous history and also call it the 2nd Troll Wars, although the campaign title will still be Troll Wars; perhaps after this we will go back and cover these initial Troll Wars you speak of if you can confirm the info; sadly my info was taken off the net not long ago, and I didn't have it written down or anything, so I can only use what I remember, but I remember it pretty well b/c it wasn't that long ago; it got taken off about the same time they announced the WoW Expansion).

Lol!

Troll Wars

Hm...well anyway, if you need anyone that's not an artist, lemme know. I'd be happy to help.

TerranUp16
Yeah, I'd say that's rather official, lol. I'll change the title of the war to the Second Troll War. That's as reliable as the information I had before. I guess that might explain why Blizz took it down, maybe the expansion reminded them they needed to. Anyways, not an artist isn't overly descriptive, lol. We're still looking for one more terrainer and someone to do cinematics. We're also looking for someone to do spells (JASS knowledge is pretty much a requirement for that area though). I've already basically listed the categories above, lol, so you've got your choice of them.

Anyways, thanks for the extra information, as it will help create a richer history to the current storyline we are making use of.

Feel free to e-mail me any of your work that you think will qualify you for one of the positions stated in the top post. My e-mail is [email protected]

Hm...shuxor.

I can do terrain, but I can't make it look natural. I have a partially completed city map that is incredibly detailed and rich, but I never do very good forest terrain.

I have a knack with the Object editor, but I'm still learning JASS, I'm afraid. I probably wouldn't be your guy there.

As you can see, my specialty is storylines, brainstorming and idea-creation. I've practically memorized the Warcraft storyline. But since you already seem to have the storyline down pat... -_- I would've liked to work on this, but I held off on learning JASS too long. O well.

Glad to have enriched your storyline.

Lol, thx. It's k. You'd have had to be very, very good at terraining since we've got two expert ones already, both of which can create their own tiles as well, lol. Voice acting is still a viable option, lol, want to bring a character to life?

Tooolbox
Hm...I'd be willing to do it, but I wouldn't have the slightly clue how. I'm also 14 and my voice is a bit high (still lowering...) so I don't know if that's what you'd be looking for, lol. I can't do an Troll Chieftan ^_^ But perhaps a little boy... :/ lol. Just tell me what roles are available.
11-15-2005, 02:09 AM#10
TerranUp16
Plenty, lol, there might be some little kid ones, lol. I'll keep you in mind once we start doing the campaigns (we're still getting the models done and getting all the stuff in the mpq; then I'll go in and create a modified World Editor, and then the campaign work begins). Just remind me periodically so I don't forget.

Okey-dokey. Do you have the entire storyline figured out? Can I take a look @ it?

EDIT: Oh ya, and who's coming up with the fully enhanced storyline, the map layouts, the quests, the characters, the abilities, the units, the dialogue, the funny details, the easter eggs, the new content, and all that?...
11-15-2005, 07:25 PM#12
TerranUp16
It originally started out as a campaign (2 of them), but then after consulting with a few people, I decided that it could easily be turned into a mod (there were also a lot of requests from people who were drooling over it).

I've got the whole storyline figured out, with all the details, and the map layouts, quests, characters, abils, units, etc... Dialogue is not 100% finalized yet. Easter Eggs will might be worked in, depending on how much extra time some people have and the ideas that people present to me (the better the idea, the more-likely it will be in the game).

Not all the stuff is 100% finalized, as even yesterday my friend (who's the web designer/command bar and menu bar modder/opening cinematic creator) brought up an interesting idea for an ability.

Nice. IMO that's the best part of making a map/mod ^_^
