Downtime Explanation

12-28-2005, 01:12 AM#1
Tim.
As I write this, I know well of the hysteria it shall provoke, and the death threats the staff shall receive. However to lie would be completely inappropriate. Due to unforeseen and un-understood complications, on December 26, Wc3Campaigns was entirely wiped from its new server. Why, we do not know. How, we do not know. However over the past 24 hours, Vexorian, Uluru, and myself have worked around the clock to restore as much as possible from a three day old backup file. The result is all data (threads, posts, announcements, pm’s, and even the Northrend theme) as of Dec. 23 (basically, everything posted after the move to the new server) has been removed. There is no way to retrieve this lost data. I am personally at fault for this and take blame. Had I made a more recent backup file less data would have been lost. To prevent this we now generate a backup file daily instead of weekly.

The staff has taken this period of downtime to redesign a few things, namely, the Gallery itself. Our old system, Photopost, contained far too many leaks in security and left Wc3Campaigns vulnerable to a variety of issues. Vexorian has designed a special section of vB into a gallery. This section will continue to adapt and change over the coming weeks in order to further develop it into a gallery rather than a forum. The plus side of this is that now you can upload multiple images into each gallery submission, so one could upload 5 angles of the same 3d model.

The rest you will see through browsing the forums; the staff and myself apologize for this, and hope that this lack of communication can be forgiven. We are doing our very best to keep Wc3Campaigns alive, and hope you do not give up on us just yet. Thank you for your continued support, it is well appreciated.

They don't know why.

I've said it before, but I still support the site, some downtime won't kill it.

I know why. It was some mistake of the hosting server admins when upgrading their server, they forgot us

Actually, I have spoken with Uluru and it seems the upgrade that was taking place was in fact a new router, nothing occurred on the server itself. The two are absolutely not related. Ah, the mystery of web hosting.

well anyway! GJ on the changes. Once the gallery is done it will be FAR better than the photopost. I like the changes, I dont like drops in rep & post :)

What a wonderful Christmas present.

We got way more server space and a safer gallery, and I doubt anybody has posted something that the world can't live without between the 23th and 26th of december.

I'd agree with Blade on this one - it's not really a big deal. Three days of posts is nothing, I'm just happy you had such a recent backup. These kind of things happen when you're ironing out the kinks of a new system. Great work on getting the site up and running in the first place, don't kick yourself over this.

I like what has been done with the Gallery. It's great that you can put multiple pictures under one thread.
