Lords of Magic - (Rise of rome type gameplay)

I've always wanted to make a map like this. NOT based on the world of Lords of Magic but the way the game worked. The goal is pretty simple.

You start of with
- 1 Castle (Mainbase)
- 1 Lord (You in person, the king/leader/general)
- a Few units

Around your castle there are several small caves/gold mines/crystal mines/brewerys etc.

First goal is to go and conquer these small locations, by doing this your Lords and units gain experience (ALL units can gain experience) you pick up some spoils/resources and sometimes maybe an item.
The lcoations are generally defened by groups neutral hostile of bandits, rogue armys etc.

The further you go from your castle the stronger and bigger encampments you'll find such as Dungeons/towers larger mines etc.
Eventually u'll come into another players territory. The goal is obviously to conquer the globe.

---

There are alot of differnet resources you can use, originally in Lord sof MAgic there were just Gold/Crystals/Ale/People.
You can get these by conquering mines and then they will bring at constant flow of resources. People you get through "fame" which in turn you get from conquering locations or killing armys.
People can be used to gather more resources or be trained into units.

Id definetly like to expand on this by adding alot more resources, at least 10.

---

Movement on the map works different than standard warcraft. Its a similiar to final fantasy. You can group up units into regiments and large scale armys and they move as 1 single unit.
When you meet another army you are transfered to a battle ground where you attack. Generally a flat surface.
When you enter a cave or dungeon you are transfered to a differnet battleground matching the location. Generally the defenders will have a slight advantage, defending a structure.

---

Originally in Lords of Magic you chose from 8 paths
Fire/Water/Earth/Wind
Order/Chaos/Life/Death

Then you chose who your lord would be Warrior/Mage/Thief each with there own specialities.

Id prefer to make it simply 8 different races and expand a bit on the classes you could choose as your Lord.

---

Generally for units you could buy Mercenaries, who were cheap but had an expensive upkeep, but most importantly you didnt need any *people* resources. These were good for suicide missions to weaken an army before sending in your private force.

For units you could pick standard units or "hero" type units, All units can level but hero units level faster and have a higher max level. Your Lord has an even higher max level.
Even non mercs have an upkeep so you must make sure you have a constant income of resources. You can trade resources in you mainbase for other ones but at a cost.

You have some buildings as well, that train varying units, which can be upgraded, have abilities researched.

So what do you guys think of this type of map? Could it work do you think?
