Ok.

Ive decided to try to take up modelling and I figured Ill start out editing WC3 models...the only problem is i dont know how to get them in GMAX for me to view/edit...infact i have no idea where i even find the models.

You can use winMPQ to open war3.mpq and/or war3x.mpq and the patch mpq archives. Just do a search for *.mdx

Alternatively get the Warcraft Viewer, it opens the MPQs in an explorer-like tree frame where you can navigate folders of models. Right click to extract them from there.

I don't know if it works for gmax, but there's KMK's importer/exporter script with wich you can import the meshes and edit them (strictly at vertex level). I attached the script, see if it works with gmax. Remember to uncheck "bone rotation", if it works, when you import a model.
