The point of the rep system - I assume - is to reward people for whatever, be it their contributions, suggestions and work. Repping someone for a picture of their work would not be abusing the system, it would be using the system for what it was made for. Who cares what the model is, it's still his art work and he is still entitled to rep for showing it.
All that aside, the skins could use some depth and they should look a little bit more like what they're trying to represent instead of being big blobs of wood/metal/whatever.
