Setting the Z position of a unit

Currently, I am trying to adjust the Z position of a unit to make them embedded slightly in the ground. In the Unit Editor, I changed the Movement-Height and Movement-Height Minimum to an appropriate value, and in the map-maker it looks fine. In preferences, I also made sure I had the 'allow negative real numbers' option checked.

As soon as I start it though, the unit is back where it was before.

I glanced through the triggers and none of them seemed to relate to changing the unit's height. I'd appreciate any help, and I'm sorry if this is a terribly obvious question.

I think you must change movement type to Hover/Air to allow change of height.

You can add Medivh's Crow Form ability with triggers and remove it instantly, and you are able to change all units' flying heights with triggers.

Not sure if it would work in this case where you want them to be in the ground though.

It should work... I forgot about Crow but heard about it.

I don't think the value can be negative in-game, even if it seems to work in the editor. When I had a related problem, I made a modified version of the model that seems to be substantially below its actual origin and changed flying heights between positive values.
