Guys it seems to me that this is a somewhat debated topic. So i thought i would ask some questions to get peoples ideas on this. Is a mapper better if he can make something great without imports? This may sound abit silly but it was a point i was thinking about while surfing warcratiii.net and viewing the maps on here. |

imports are only there to heighten the presentation, i think it's not really needed but... eye candy counts! :D |

i dislike imports. i find it quite silly when people say they cant terrain without importing a special tree doodad or something else. sure its fine for a mod or special campaign but when your just terraining incase you didnt notice...all trees fit in with the tile sets. so people are just silly. |

The standard trees look butt ugly. |

sometimes u just can't make a nice terrain without customs, like a tauren village would look really "wierd" with 3-4 types of tents which half looks the same, and yeah blizz trees are ugly(i think dead trees and palms ar ok, but the rest... |

a mapper is stoopider if he/she dosen't use imports. instead of sweating your ass off to make a building or any other stuff out of multiple doodads, you can just model one or ask someone to make a model for it and it saves a lot of time and it also looks better. people are silly if they think using imports is silly or just frustrated that they can't make models by theirselves or 60+ year-olds who don't give up on original traditions. |

also a mapper makes the map for playing usually (and coz its fun) so he/she must keep the filesize low, and make things less laggy... terrainers do it for fun, and the map size really doesn't count at all --> they use whatever they want Oh and most of map's size is wasted on unit models and skins, so if map makers want to make really good terrain they could do it easily, so there is really nothin wrong with imports... |

what's with the size and lag! with today's internet connection speeds the size is no problem (if you're a 56k dude, buy a cable connection, it's not that expensive...at least here) and today's comps don't lag on a game like wc3. |

I was refering to models polycounts. It may be so with triggers, if you say so. |

yep. infinite loops eat away any power you throw at it. |

Im one who uses next to none imports at times. I usualy make stuff look fine without the need to import custom doodads If people like to import or not to import, its fine with me. Its all how one likes to work |

be it in game otherwise, terrains soul purpouse is too look good, and therefor it is impossable to reasonably use the phrase "better terrainers", as any judgments on a piece of terrain will be no more than a matter of opinion. typicaly its other terrainers who most prefer to see a low number of imports, as they can appreciate how inovative and complexly structured a terrain is. but if its a matter of what is more pleaseing to they eye (usualy dependant on detail), then most would consider that custom models (specificly trees) are important if not essential part of any work |
