Terrain Opinion

Hi all, is this a good start on a terrain? Dont look for any doodads or tile variations as I havent added any of these, whatI want your opinion on is the height difference. Is it too flat? Or is it maybe to many hills and stuff?

When Im done with this stage I will smooth it out and remove the "steps" and then add some tile variation and trees and stuff.

its supposed to be for an RPG

EDIT: Added another pic, this is might how It'll look like abit. Your opinions?
EDIT2: New with trees, tile variation and fog
EDIT3: yet another pic added, some doodads and stuff.
EDIT4:Same spot with fog and weather added. (the weather is hard to see but its lorderain light rain)

its ok, not too much to judge,...
for what kind of terrain will be this? (mountains, plain, forest)

Forest, I know you cant really say much about it, I just want to be sure its not flat as the comment on most of my terrainposts here have been "I'ts flat" by PlasticAngel ;P

So, for a forest its ok, really good, i can't say its awesome, it doesnt have doodds or tiles or fog or weather, so thats is your next step. ;D

Yeah :) I'll post some new ss's when I can. Really like this style I used on the first pic. I usually get tired of terraining cause it feels like I dont have any control of it. Mostly because I had already put out the trees and doodads so It was hard to change the terrain.
So I pressed Ctrl+A, Delete.
Hope the terrain gets better now :P

(I was thinking about the fog, currently its just a dark black fog. I'm unsure on which color to choose for the right atmosphere, I'll post a pic on how the trees look like.)

(The quality on the skin is really different then it is now, this picture was before I change the 256x256 skins to 64x64, it lowered the filesize from about 600kb to 30kb : )

If u' want to create the right atmosphere, try changing between these factors

Weather <----------> Fog (most important) <--------> Lighting

Start placing big doddads (trees, big rocks) and then put small doddads (shrubs, small rocks, mushrooms, cattails, etc)

When you have all your doddads placed, try to create an atmosphere that fits with those doddads and tile (if it's a barrens tile, ok, it has big rocks, lots of desert, orc structures, its a HOT damn red-orange enviornment, so an orange fog will fit very well, if it is an ashenvale style, ashenvale has lots of trees with nice colors and shapes, grass, rivers, waterfalls, night elf buildings and secreet and magic everywhere, maybe a dark blue, dark teal or dark green fog),

take a look at the art gallery if u ned some examples.

I LOVe that tree

Yeah its kind of an human forest(so no elf or magical stuff involved).
I'm trying to achieve something like wows elwynnforest If you've seen it.

EDIT: Added another pic with tilevariation, trees and some dark fog
EDITS: added some more pics.

You could use some kind of sky here. A Felwood sky would fit well, or perhaps Dalaran? Nice start anyway, good job.

Ty :)

The reason why half of the picture is black is because the part Im doing is in the edge of the map, So I didnt turn on any sky as It would look screwed up :P

Will add some more pictures soon, thank you for your comments. This still is WIP so it needs more work.
Would like more suggestions on what to change.

EDIT: Added 3 more pics with sky. Remember it looks wierd because its the edge of the map.

Sorry for the late respond, anyway, it's lookin' good over there. The only thing that clashes is the rain and the blue sky. Blizzard sky + white fog usually does the trick if you want to make it look perty.
If you don't know how to expand your map I can tell you, but I don't want to make a fool out of myself. :P

Thunder_Eye
Well I dont want to expand the map, i'll maybe even have to shrink it.
And even if I would expand it it would still have and edge that would look wierd : P

I'll try changing sky.

I recommend making Raised mountains surrounding the map, takes some place but meh, it looks better.

Well the problem is that when I started this rpg (some years ago) I made a chart of the "world".

So I have to make all the edges "accessable"

If possible maybe I kind of raise the terrain making a high wall like this

And then maybe attach a screenshot from the next map so it looks like the map continues but you cant go there.

I thought of that too, it might work, but skinning the actuall skybox would rock. :)
