I attached a model to a unit- a staff, that acts strange when used. I attached it using the "hand" string, but when the unit goes to attack, the staff stays in the same position, hovering below his hand. It doesnt move when he goes to attack or anything.

Maybe there's something wrong with the actual unit's attachment points? Is it a normal Wc3 unit or a custom one?

Then there is likely something wrong with the attachment points of the unit model.

Did you make sure the attachment is attached to that proper bone?

You shoudl specify hand left or hand right, but sounds like the author forgot to attach the point to a bone.

I extracted the model from a WoW archive, i'm thinking that I destroyed a geoset that had the bones for "hand, left" and "hand, right" on it.

Geosets don't have bones. No doubt the attachments won't be children of the correct bone. Use Magos' Model Editor to check. If the attachments aren't where they're supposed to be, it's easy enough to shunt them around.
