Water model

Thought this might come in handy for people who think wc3 water is just too ugly (like me).

What it is:
It is a stacking of 512x512 planes. The top one has 50% transparency and holds an animated texture (ingame), the ones below are 75% transparent and have an egal blue texture.

Why is this better than wc3 water?
  • Normal water isnt stacked in planes like this, the plane is simply made more transparent as it gets closer to surface. That only looks good from 1 perspective: birds eye view. This model is nice to look at from all directions.
  • It is easier to place, simply give it a pathing texture of a circle of power and the water will line up correctly, to make water the normal way you would have to first create it, raise the ground (cliff) and then lower it, and this would demolish all terrain around it.
  • The Z-axis can be changed (on doodads) to affect the transparency of the water.

There's 1 catch tho. Shoreline waves will have to be added manually. The paths for those are:

Table:
Constant shorelineDoodads\LordaeronSummer\Water\Shoreline\Shoreline0.mdl
Single waveDoodads\LordaeronSummer\Water\ShorelineWave\ShorelineWave0.mdl
Triple WaveDoodads\LordaeronSummer\Water\ShorelineWave\ShorelineWave1.mdl

Hope itll be usefull enough :)

(Models by nasrudin, born²modificate and buster were used to create this screenshot.)

Looks very nice, will test it. :)
EDIT: Awesome!! ^^, looks much more real then the blizzard one. you could add a note though that It would be better make the water an doodad as then you can lower/raise it.

make a lava version if you want to make something simulair to this.

I'm loving it. This also gives modders nice alternative options to using actual water, i dont know why that would nescesarily be helpfull, but we all know deep water cant be crossed unless [insert more yadayada here]

good job.

How else would you add it.. destructable? those can be raised too, but it seemed obvious to use it as doodad to me :)

No use as a destructible, considering there's no death animation?

Anyway, very sweet. Considered making nice water myself before, but the sandwich idea is nice. from me!

If you want to play with it in-game (Low/High tide for example) then there is a use.

it would own with a death animation, so you can dry up the lands or something, that would own for a murlock RPG LOL

Make it an unit with locust and this modelfile, add medihv crowform and change its height with periodic triggers if you want low and high tide, this proberly seems very obvious for many here but for some not.

And this pwnz donkey azz and in my opinion water is better of without shorewaves

Just a question:
What's with amphibous units and ships wc3? What's with the ability <submerge>? Did you think about that or are we to forget that at all?

Could always use proper water, make it transparent and then use a pile of this stuff on top. Would be less versatile but nicer looking.

This is rather made to look nice, like for terraining and cinematics, where pathing (and CERTRAINLY naval pathing) doesnt really matter that much.
But Rao's suggestion should work.
