Rep - how much spreading b4 you can thank someone?

I've been trying to give rep to someone who's helped me heaps, but I keep getting the message "You must spread some rep around first"

So how much rep do I need to spread before I can give it to someone I already have?

You have to give to another five people before reping the same person. That avoids unfair spreading.
