Ok well usually the skin lines up automatically with the model, I would suggest downloading all of the software needed for extracting skins, previewing them on the model..etc. They should all be on this site actually

part of the skin won't line up right or out of place, also I'm doing only a piece of the skin at a time.

Don´t understand what you´re trying to say :s... But i suppose you´re editing an existing skin, unless your going to make a custom model... Try to be more specific, pliz

That makes no sense, custom models also can use ingame skins.

Anyway...
What I think Linera is trying to tell is that the UV doesn't fit.

But to make it possible for anyone to help you, tell us what programs you are using, what tutorial you are using, etc.
That sort of thing.

Yes he wants to edit the UV Map. You need to use Max or the Vertex Modifier and edit the model itself.

Yeah, I know you can use an existing skin for a custom model, but he possibly wanted to make one from scratch :p

First off, its impossible to find a copy of 3DS Max that works with the art tools so that program is out of the question.

My model can't use ingame skins.

Also I don't want to change the way the model looks, I only want to change the skin and how its position on the model. as some parts are lined up correctly.

That does not help us, we need to know what model, what steps did you take to get that error, what program you used to convert MDX->MDL, and if worst comes to worse we need to see the MDL.
