Asking your honest opinion - my boss design

No, this is not about models or skins or anything like that, it is about the way my bosses will behave in my campaigns.

I will tell you a little bit more about my background... I've been a wc3 player for several years now, firstly I only played offline enjoying the campaigns and trying to immitate them with the editor (this is still RoC ^^) untill I started playing online. I got the Destroyer icon as a hardcore undead fan but kept using the editor.

6 Months ago I switched to WoW untill now, I always had some project in mind. A campaign to be exactly. If there's one thing which I always loved to do in the wc3e it was making my own adventure maps. I never felt tempted to make TD, Dota or any of those kind of maps, always the campaigns.

Anyway now I'm back here, I started to work on my project. I hope to release the intro cinematic quite soon but I need to create some skins already ^^. I got bored while working on it and decided to quickly change to a little different aspect of my campaign (sorry I'm not going telling more on that, it will come, it's not important yet), the bosses.

There will be traditional heroes in the campaign but also a sort of 'boss-type'. I told you I have been playing WoW for some time and that inspired me to implement this, it's quite easy to do and it took me just some hours to make this little demo of what I actually mean.

Feel free to download this and fight my 'boss' ^^. Of course I would really appreciate if you gave me your opinion about it. What did you like? What didn't you like? Should the fight be longer/shorter? Should do boss do more stuff? etc. etc.

P.S. Realize this map has NOTHING to do with the story of my campaign, I also made to ammuse my brother. It was just a demo to get the feel of what the bosses wil be like.

NOTE: The 2nd file is when the events AREN'T CINEMATIC, to improve the control of battle you have. Kingtofu noticed when you are fighting the boss you lose control of battle, buffs expire etc... So now the fight just keeps on going instead of a few seconds of cinematic action. The 1st link still has cinematic pauses in between the fights.

NOTE: The 3rd file is another update on the cinematic problem, now the cinematic does play but know you have 3 seconds pause before the fight continues. 3 Seconds in which you can regroup, target, buff, debuff etc...

I only completed it with Human and Undead for now on.

EDIT: ignore all those stupid upload sites, attachment included now. DespositFiles works but it really slow...

It's certainly frustrating. Remove the cinematic scenes and make the events real time, I don't like having the big guy banished and then after a cutscene run around rabid because he's no longer etheral.

Night Elves have no healing. I really don't see how it's possible to beat him with those races.

Hmm, I'll consider the cinematic thing... Though it makes the total look a lot better ^^

Night Elves have no healing but that just a detail, I would always make healing some way possible. Initially you could only play human, I quickly added the other races to see if it was possible with them.

EDIT: More detail actually. In the real campaign not the heroes will fulfill these specific roles (tank, heal etc) but the units. Then you get an army to defeat this bosses. Since all races have forms of healing that will be no issue.

You can still maintain cinema style without doing a cutscene. It really throws people (me, atleast) off when I lose control of my heroes and try to scramble to maintain stance, the tank, keep healing, etc. My losses were all resulting from post-cutscene chaos.

Updated! Link 1 still contains the good-old fashioned cinematic pauses. Link 2 now has non-stop battle while the event happens.

Well, now there is no cinematic interruption, but Jefrey is now our unit. Needless to say I won that one.

Well, honestly I am impressed. I can see obvious influences from World of Warcraft (a good thing), and boss fights in Warcraft 3 never have depth beyond 'right-click him.' You have inspired me.

My complaint is that while I knew what needed to be done to win the boss fight, keeping my units still was quite a chore. Perhaps if you take this boss fight thing and run with it, you could make it more managable. For example, I would have loved to have a skill that would plant the given heroes in place until the skill was turned off. Everytime I would heal with my paladin, I would have to hold position again or he would run up and start attacking again, frustrating.

So yeah.

Cinematic was bad, I dont think it was really needed. Perhaps pause the units. Erm, rambling here, but, it had one good point, that being that it allowed you to consider the new foe. Also, the only bad part I could find is that there was no heal available to all the races.
