WT 25 - Marketplace

06-25-2006, 09:01 PM#1
[Death]
A lone traveller walked into a desert city, his cloak and face weathered by the harsh wind. He was not out of place, as the whole city contained traders of this type. The city was bustling with people walking this and that way, yelling out for money or specific items. Market stalls littered the roads as large structures made out of mud stood defiantly behind them. A young man by the name of Stephen squeezed into the large mass of people. He yelled out into the air, "Alms! Alms! Alms for the poor! Let a poor wretch live!" But to this, there was no answer. He walked instead to the garden near the church.

Here's my try at this - going for something a little more... demonic and foreboding :P Of course, this is a Work In Progress, and it's at a rather early stage in development:

I'm aiming for more of a bustling inner-city type feel, I suppose a Mos Eisley of the Warcraft world

Put a tavern as in Mos Eisley and I will be happy.

A good and original idea but I can't feel is a market place yet, but meh is a wip. Hmm also dungeon's light doesn't help much to this, but lets see how it ends.

In the Ultimate Terraining map, there is a leg-less table. Maybe u can find it useful :)

Finally had the time and effort to write a little comment about the terrain again, hope they will be appreciated.

I think you need to get rid of those levels and use deforms instead, try toying a bit more with the tileset variation as well.
things look way to empty and neither did you really achieved to make a market (yes you have some market buildings) but there isn't really an indication in your map that say that people are selling things, except for the 3rd screen perhaps.

Try to create background, add a sky, some fog and some more doodads would be a nice starter.

jukebox42
Your screenshot of your terrain is nice, although you kinda had the same problem as nevir had, you didn't really create a scene of a market in which people are selling things.
The stairs that lead to the houses I like, but like said before, those lamps are kinda odd, you could just lower the camera or increase the X factor of the laterns in order to remove the actual lamp from the scene.

Some more screens and perhaps a larger overview of the terrain would have given more insight in things.

Infrane
I like what you build, but its still all a bit empty, filling up spaces behind the market would be an advice, but I guess you are not going to finnish this anyway.
Nonetheless I think you did well on creating the "market" part of the map, although I personally feel that you could have placed some fences.
Like you could have seen in the screenshots death gave, markets are crowded places, and tents are placed virtually on top of each other =P, this however is missing in your screen, try to space it down a bit, or make more tents.

More filling in the background, and placing more tents would have been the contributes in this terrain.

Will the period be extened for a bit, seeing how there aren't too many pics. I was away from comp for a while and saw this thing just yesterday.
